Picked one up this fall and almost sold it, but did some shooting and hunting with it and really ended up loving the gun. I've been shooting savage 99's for years and really have a deep appreciation for them but the 71 has some characteristics that are hard not to appreciate. Anyone else on this forum have experience with both, what are your thoughts on the 99 versus the 71?

God Bless,

MM

As cool as the Savage 99 is, it still ain't Winchester Model 71 cool. But almost nothing is.

I have 2 71s. They both still get used, but kinda only for black bear now. My only remaining 99 sits in the safe. It is a 300 Savage, and I believe my love for my Win 88 in 308 is what keeps it there.....

I have one of each - I shoot the 99 more, but if I had to choose between them, I wouldn't part with the 71...

It may be a sacrilege to some but my smith is putting a scout mount on it for me, just couldn't get used to the peep. Looking forward to spending some time shooting this spring when I get it back. It is going to be hunted, and I just plain like a scope on a gun.

Big mistake IMO. One you will one day regret.

There are LOTS of rifls to scope in he world. But only so many unmolested 71s. Evening Brownings.

Plan on it cutting the value of the rifle by 50%, as well....

I have an old mod 71 and a new production winchester mod 71, unless hunting alpine deer they are the only rifles I use. The 250gr woodleigh is accurate and performs perfectly, there is just something special about hunting with a mod 71 with peep sights.

Just inherited two 71s. One is the fancy model and the other not yet shot "shooter" model. But have not had a chance to shoot it yet. It is solid and smooth and sweet and beauty to behold.

But I'm not liking the buck horn sight, but that's what it is. I'm looking at the peep installed on the top of the bolt.

I have a Browning Carbine set up with a Lyman Peep.

200gr Hornady flatpoint with IMR4350 and at 100 yards sub 2 inch groups all day long.

Very pleasant to shoot as well even with the metal plate.

I just grin bigger and bigger every time I shoot it. And it bowls deer over rather nicely.
