I own a newer 1886 and it has few common parts with the original 1886's. I'm tempted to buy a newer 1895 Winchester, but if it is a **cked up as the newer 86's, then no way. Are the new 95's built like the old ones, or have they been "improved" like the 86's? Thanks for the info

Browning imported a Japanese Miroku 1895 in the mid-80's that AFAIK stayed pretty true to the original design. The Miroku 1895 imported more recently by winchester has a tang safety and a rebounding hammer.

Both models did away with the curved buttplate in favor of a more standard flat "shotgun" buttplate.

In their favor, the later ones are made with better steel so they can take modern 60,000 psi loads. The originals, though strong enough for the loadings of the time, were made with lesser strength steels and can develop excessive headspace when fired with the modern higher pressure rounds.

I recently acquired a .30-06 1895 made in 1928 and it is a fine rifle but I keep the loadings well away from top end. Since the '06 earned its reputation as a stone cold killer with a 150 grain bullet at 2700 fps and that's what my loads do so I don't see it as a great handicap.

The new 1895s have the same "improvements" as the 1886 Winchesters; meaning rebounding hammers and tang mounted safeties. A way to avoid that is to buy a Browning 1895, which were made in the 1980s (and I forget when discontinued). The Brownings are easily had on a few of the auction sights.

I suggest that you shoot one of the Miroku made Browning or Winchesters 1895 rifles in the caliber of your choice and then make an informed decision.
I never wanted one until I helped a friend sight in his Miroku/Winchester 1895 .405 WCF - damn! I could not miss with it and the action and trigger were as smooth as my 1907 1892.

After that, I had to have one and bought a takedown to hunt with and an unfired Deluxe to look at.

Here is my Winchester 1895 30/06 Centennial saddle ring carbine. While it has the "lawyer" mods to bring it into 21st Century Compliance, I don't really find them a hindrance. It is strong, accurate and good looking. I like it!

Did that come factory drilled and tapped for the sight? I see some models of the recent Winchesters are factory D&T'ed but most aren't. I sorta kinda wouldn't mind tapping one for a good sight like that but have this ingrained aversion to putting extra holes in factory rifles.

I have three of them and love them! An original made in 1916 in 303 Brit that I use for hogs, and two Mirokus, a 1909 TR African Safari Commemorative and a standard one, both in 405. That one I had a period correct Winchester pad from Galazan's installed and a rear peep (I had to drill & tap) and believe me that peep cuts groups in half! Enjoy!
