All,

We're ready to move forward with the group buy on the Montana Rifle Company/Whittaker Guns exclusive. I discussed this with Rick and we decided to list it in the hunting rifles section in lieu of the classifieds. This rifle will only be offered to members of 24hourcampfire. If they all don't sell, I stick the remainder on the shelf at the shop. The specs on the rifle are below.

- Montana Rifle Company Extreme X2 (stainless/synthetic)
- 260 Remington
- Fluted 22" barrel
- 1 in 8" twist
- MRC X2 green stock with black/gray webbing
- 20 right hand rifles, 5 left hand rifles
- $1259.99 (plus shipping to your FFL)

If you'd like to get in on the buy, please send an email to darrikwhittakerguns.com
Please include:

- MRC Exclusive in the subject line.
- Your full name and screen name on here.
- Your contact info including your phone number
- Your preferred method of deposit payment

Someone will contact you to process the order ASAP (if during business hours). A 15% non-refundable deposit is required to hold your order. Methods of payment are credit card, personal check, certified check or money order. A 3% fee will be added for all credit card transactions. The price listed above is at a cash (or check) discount. Balance will be due in full once the rifles are ready to ship -- you can even pay over time while waiting if you'd like. You will be charged exact shipping to your locale, not an inflated estimate. US only at this time. I'm still working on potential Canadian orders.

Lead time is approximately 12-14 weeks once the stocks are complete. Before shipping, we will require a signed copy from your receiving FFL.

This buy will be limited to 25 rifles. The second (and different) batch of exclusives will be announced the first week of April.

MRC sent me a picture of their green stock for reference. The picture below was taken upon completion of painting and the tape hasn't been pulled yet. I'm posting it for a color idea.

Feel free to email/PM questions! IF WANTING IN IMMEDIATELY ON THE BUY, PLEASE SEND AN EMAIL TO THE ADDRESS ABOVE. I can't always answer PM's and will only use the email as a time stamp.

Thanks in advance and I'll update this post as needed!

Typed in wrong e-mail address and it was kicked back to me, but I have corrected it and you should have my e-mail now.

I have a habit of typing a "q" where a "g" should go.

Greg,

They list the rifle as 6lbs 14oz on their site, but this one will have a fluted barrel. I'm not sure if the weight listed is with the old or new stock, but the new stock is lighter than the older B&C.

I don't guess we'll have a true weight until one is finished! An estimate would be in the 6lb 10oz range bare...

Are these bedded from the factory? If yes, how? Are they glass pillar bedded or what?

Their 260 reamer is good to go. Mine is a couple of years old, but jeffbird has a newer 260. You shouldn't have any problem reaching the lands with any and all high BC bullets. The mag box in these rifles is quite generous. That's another appeal of the rifle...

We didn't do any engraving. We pondered the idea, but most of the guys didn't want anything on the floor plate. I plan to include some goodies in the box, as well as a certificate signifying the exclusive.

The trigger is the same design as the older Winchester Model 70. It's an open trigger -- fully adjustable.

Let me check with MRC on the LOP.

It would add value, like "Dale Earnhardt" on the Remmie stocks.

Looking forward to seeing these get the dog snot run out of them. Really curious to see crossover in load development.

And glad I hoarded 260 brass....

Using a Stoney Point/Hornady comparator with an inner diameter of 0.253", base of the shell to ogive contact with the lands is 2.270". The mag box is 3.125", so the magazine can accommodate 0.855" maximum length of nose in front of the ogive to still to able to load into the magazine. This is based off of measurements on Barnes 100 grain TTSX.

Guys,

17 of the rifles are spoken for. We have 8 left. I can't give a breakdown on right hand vs. left hand yet because a couple guys didn't specify action orientation. We've sent emails and called for verification. I'll update tomorrow morning.

I do know for a fact 2 of the 5 left handed rifles are gone...

Thanks!

Double_D and Jim - thanks! Pretty exciting having a grandson.

Jim - not sure you remember, but I bought a 7x57 Ruger #1 from you several years ago here on 24HCF. What great gun that's taken whitetail, mule deer, pronghorn and a couple coyotes. That will probably go to him or his future sister or brother also.

Derrik - sorry for the off topic diversion - but that's what proud grandparents do!!

I used to live in Evansville and made the trek to Whittakers a few times while I lived there. This thread is a great example of listening to your clients and delivering a product that they want. Congrats to the team at Whittakers. I've got a lefthanded 260 at present, but will be watching the future releases.

Kenneth,

Honestly, I'm going to leave that open to the members here. Towards the end of the month I'll start a new thread about the next run. That's why I'm doing it the way I did. I want your input.

BTW -- I'm a big 308 fan...

Maybe this was answered in the other thread by why the limit to 25? I know you were committed to 25 per quarter but most group buys I've seen set some minimum limit - i.e., we need to order at least this many whatevers to get the company to make the special run, but if we get orders for more than that then so much the better.

Not criticizing, just curious.

Jim,

My total commitment was 100. 25 per quarter. These rifles are on top of our/their normal business. We had to set a goal for production because these rifles won't be in their normal spec (special twist, flutes, etc.).

Please keep in mind that we may be stuck with some inventory too. This buy went well, but we may only sell half of the next run and I'd be committed to selling them in house. Make sense?

Make the next group either 7-08 or 284 win, and I'm on board. Interested to hear from the rest of our 'fire brothers how this bunch turns out. Thanks SAS.

284, twisted and throated correctly, is the only thing truly unique that would be a hot item in this series.

I think a 243 would be nice, with a 1-8" tube.

Particularly with the generous mag box that the Montana has.

Yeah a 243 would be near perfect. How about a 6mm Remington in factory or AI configuration? Is there enough mag box in the MRC to seat the 105gr.+ VLD's to a good OAL?

I've not messed with the 6mm Rem except for a Ruger M77 with 100gr. cup and core spitzers.
I do know that it appealed to me as a teeny bit better than the 243. Maybe. But that's the fun of it all ain't it?

A 284 throated for the long box would be the schnizzle.

I have a 3.5-10x40 VX-III that I am going to put on mine initially. After some load development it shoots little small groups with good long range bullets (3/4" or less) I will replace that scope with something I can dial and play with it long range. If accuracy is good to average ( 1" plus) I will keep the VX-III on it and use it for a woods rifle, 200 to 300 yards maximum.

I will be happy going either way.

Nope. I call that good planning!

Have not found any Lapua brass in stock at the usual online retailers. Will stop by my local guy sometime this week. He usually has a good supply of 6.5mm bullets - the brass I'm not so sure. In a pinch, I'll get some Nosler brass just in case the Lapua does not show up.

I didn't get one. They sold too fast and I wanted everybody here to grab what they wanted first. Besides, I already have a MRC 260.

Not to mention I have about a bajillion other guns I want to buy from the shop....

Darrik,
You need to have a one day "Campfire Special" at the shop. Where we can all meet and greet each other, and maybe buy a rifle or two...
Just a thought...

I just saw this. If there's a right hand left I'll take one. Any chance of running more than 25 if they're all spoken for?

I would have to throw a twisted, throated, 243 win into the mix for that conversation. Considering its generous mag restraints, it would be an instant hit. It would be a serious mistake if one of the group buys weren't spec'd accordingly.

But whens the last time you saw brass?

Wouldn't a 7mm-08 be more sensible?

A little pricier, but 6.5x284 Lapua is just a stroke away from 284.

Guys,

The buy is officially closed on the first run. We mailed the check to MRC for payment in full on the first batch a few minutes ago.

With that being said, I still have one left hand rifle left. If nobody here claims it, I'll put it on the shelf when they arrive.

Thanks again to everybody involved. I'll post another thread around the end of the month addressing the second batch of rifles.

SAS,

Thanks again for putting this together. I am looking forward to seeing how the rifle shoots.

To my fellow lefties,

Come on, we cry about the lack of lefty options but here is a company offering some quality rifles for us. SAS could have easily sold 25 right handed rifles and not bothered with us. We can't even purchase 5? No wonder most companies won't bother making left handed rifles.

I'm damn patient as you well know. Still waiting on you to shoot Carl Ross' positional shoot. For someone who is supposed to be so damn good, you'd think you would have gotten it done by now... wink.

Well, since they've all sold, I will post my MRC XCR 260 for sale. Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to be self serving as I am trying to give someone interested in a brand new MRC Stainless 260 first shot before I post it in the classifieds. It's not one of the special runs offered here; but, it is a 260 MRC XCR, unfired. I will sell it for $1135 shipped and insured. Like I said, I posted it here for those who may have missed out on the special runs. I will be posting it in the classifieds next week. If interested, send me a pm. shortactionsmoker, irrespective of my motives, if you feel it inappropriate of me to have posted at the end of this thread, let me know and I will delete it. I will send you a pm to bring this to your attention.

Update...

I spoke with MRC yesterday. The barreled actions are complete. They're currently waiting on the safety. The stocks are in process. Things should be popping up soon.

Hopefully, they'll give me a firm timeline within a week or so.

Just made another payment. $200.00 every other week and it's almost paid off. Easier on my mad money account. Now were they to offer a 9.3x62 next, this would start all over again. What scope and rings are you all thinking about?

Of all the suggestions I've received by PM, I'd say the 358 Winchester is the leading contender.

A stainless 358 with a 20" barrel and open sights would be interesting. I kind of miss my 338 rcm.

I'd be all about a .358. Have been "planning" one in my head for a few months.

I would definately take another in an 8 twist 243. I'm also thinking a 284 win might work with that 3.1" magazine. Make that an 8.5 or 8.75 twist.

I'm in the same boat. Not sure how I missed it. I'm definately awaiting news on the next batch. 9.3x62 would be a great choice.

The two chamberings that will make for a unique offering that makes the most of the platform are the 284 and 9.3x62.

I've have a 1:8" 6.5x55 long action ordered. But gotta admit, that a 1:8" .243 on the short action would be interesting... grin

6.5-06 AI with at least a 24" tube. I'd be all over something like that.

I've got this exact rifle but with a #3 Brux tube I'll be selling here shortly as soon as I get it back from Kampfeld - If interested, PM me. 24" tube -

I'll see your 43 Egyption and raise you a 25 Stevens Rimfire.

Actually, a 270 Win with a 1/8" twist would be sweet. The bullet manufacturers are bringing out more VLD bullets in .277".

Yeah I'm curious to see how these will turn out. I would like to see a side by side review between a Faux Ti (ITD re barrel) and this group buy. The money would be comparable. The longer mag well really is a big advantage though.
