Yup - and good places to buy them.

Jeff, not quite sure what you mean by "high performance". I used Princeton tech headlamps when I surfcasted. That headlamp was constantly exposed to salt water plus getting dropped on rocks.
Cant really think of a rougher environment to put a headlamp thru. So if you mean a light that you can beat the crap out of as "high performance" then I would Princeton tech fills that description.

1 cr123 battery which is the same as my surefire. AAA batteries exploded more than once in my tikka and maglight.
Has hi/lo red light settings and hi/lo white light setting. So far so good!

Were those lithium batteries that you had the problem with?

No Rayovac alkaline. BTW battery companies will cover cost of your equipment if their batteries explode in your electronic device. When I called maglight to inform them what happened they told me to contact battery mfg. They did cover the cost. This was a flashlight for my toolbox and it experienced temperature extremes.

Just curious, I've never heard of batteries exploding in a headlamp.

Its comforting to know that Rayovac will replace a battery that explodes while strapped to my head.

An iditarod musher friend of mine had a headlamp battery box explode under her parka one night on a long training run. It was a battery box that held 4 D cells and she had put one of the batteries in backwards. She said she was confused because she knew the batts were fresh, but the headlamp was pretty dim. She ended up with pretty painful acid burns on her chest and a long painful run home in sub zero temps.

It might not be common, but it can happen.....

Some thoughts:

Energizer will replace the device if a battery leaks.

HSUS is vehemently anti and should nor be confused with the American Humane Society.

Any mention of REI will turn into a sshitstorm.

Petzl Taktikka.

This won't be the first time that I have chosen to go with a suggestion by Travis. After some research, the Petzl is on it's way to my house.

I actually have a few lights that I have always managed to get by on,

but in about a week I will travel to the mountains of eastern Turkey for Bezoar Ibex and I want a new light for this and future trips.

thanks for all... well, thanks for most of the shared information!

Good luck on the Ibex. Sounds fun.

Thanks Travis,

I have waited until I am on the verge of 54 years old to tackle my toughest mountain hunt ever. I'm certain to have my ass handed to me by this beautiful rugged and steep country that just beat down some young mountain goat friends of mine but I'm gonna go give it my best and see what happens. It will certainly be an adventure!

I'm not looking to REI to be pro or anti-hunting. I could really care less. I look to REI to provide me with quality gear for whatever I do in the backcountry, be it hunting or contemplating God.

Good Grief...

You'll make it your bitch!

I like reading about guys your age going on hunts like this because it tells me I can keep procrastinating...

Anything worth doing is worth procrastinating.

I'll elaborate on the concept later.
