What's with the round white plastic piece on the 336's located on the bottom side on the stock? What purpose does it serve?

A trademark.
Quote from book Marlin Firearms: A History of the Guns and the Company that Made Them, USAR Lt. Col. William S. Brophy
"In 1922 when the newly formed Marlin Firearms Corporation was formed, under the leadership of John Moran, a bull's-eye design became the new Marlin trademark. It not only was used on printed matter but also was inlaid into the bottom surface of the buttstock of each firearm. A statement about the bull's eye by Marlin Firearms Company was as follows:
Every single Marlin bears a "birthmark" which instantly identifies it. Customers in your store have but to glance at the butt of the gun to know it is a Marlin. The bulls'-eye-symbol of accuracy- is the most fitting kind of trademark for Marlin, make and breaker of World's target records. Inlaid in black and white on the butt of every Marlin arm, it makes not only a complete identification, but a beautiful accent of decoration. You will realize what an enormous helpful thing this is, saving you time and paving the way for a sale. Your years of selling experience will tell you that merchandise which can be immediately identified has selling value almost beyond price. "

I bought a new Marlin 308MX a few years ago that made it through the factory without getting the "bullseye".

Wonder if they sell them separately? It fell out of the stock on my old 39A

You can get the piece at Midway and Brownell. The piece is needs to be cut as it is long enough for a couple stocks. I have half of one that needs to go in a 39 missing it.

Thanks guys, didn't think there'd be that much market for them. Guess they fall out more often than I thought!

I'm glad I got in here. Mine is missing from my 39A also.

On a lot of them that I've seen on the used racks over the years, people have often used the bullseye to drill through and screw in the rear sling stud.

I have ten Marlins. Four need Bulls eyes. They do fall out.
