I've carried a G29 for a long time now as my primary bear defense. I tried a few revolvers, but for several reasons I kept coming back to the glock. More rounds and the thing is as tough as a brick. I can drag it through the mud and rain and I don't worry about it. I know it will work if I do my part.

Up until now I've carried some hot double tap 10mm rounds with what I believe is a gold dot bullet. I've debated carrying hard ball and gone back and forth.

I think I've found a great answer.

Some of you may have seen videos on the lehigh xtreme penetrator bullets. I saw another one yesterday that MAC did using their bullet in a 380 load and it really opened my eyes. It is a solid copper bullet that penetrates like hard ball but leaves a lot more destruction in its path. It looks like this:

[Linked Image]

Here's the video of MAC shooting the smaller version of this bullet out of his 380 glock 42. It changed his mind about carrying a 380.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-PDQcE-1T40

There's not much out there on the 10mm version that underwood is loading, but I just ordered some. If it shoots well out of my glock, I'll be carrying it all the time when I'm in bear country. A magazine full of that stuff should do the trick to just about any bear. They are also loading that bullet for the 357.

This bullet is a game changer.

Just another "gimmick" round.

Buffalo Bore 220 gr Hard Cast LFN ammo at 1200 fps will do all you need to do.

Nothing beats bone crushing Penatration and shot placement!

The BB stuff does only 1140 from the G20, and will do less than that in the G29. Just for reference. Lead is NOT recommended in a Glock barrel (per the factory). That would include the BB stuff.

Also, the "gimmick round" is designed for penetration.

Shot placement trumps everything.

So I guess the thousands of rounds of "lead" bullets I've put down range through my Glock 29 & Glock 20 should have caused it to go "Kaboom" long ago. wink

Buffalo Bore bullets and my personal cast bullets are hard cast, not typical pure lead bullets. They are perfectly safe to shoot in a Glock. And if your worried about shooting lead in your Glock, try cleaning your barrel once in a while. YMMV wink

The 220 grain BB is a bruiser for sure.

Can you tell me what the "gimmick" is with this bullet? It does what it says it does - very very well.

Here's one video I found of the bullet out of the 10mm:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S2LKZy5-y64

It goes through body armor, then 4" of clay (leaving a hole the size of a softball), then blows through two jugs of water.

If that's a gimmick, sign me up for it.

Their you tube video is kinda misleading. The body armor they used was only rated for a .357 mag round fired from a handgun. Also the bullet only weighs 140 grains. Also didn't see any accuracy tests for their Magic bullet.
My Glock 20 and Kimber 1911 in 10mm will shoot 5 rounds of Buffalo Bore Ammo into a 1" group at 25 yards off of a sandbag.
Like I said before, you just can't beat the Buffalo Boar 220 gr LFN bullet.

Take it up with Glock; it's their factory advice, not mine.

No, we recommend the use of jacketed ammunition only.

Or talk to Tim Sundles, of Buffalo Bore. All his 10mm loads were developed using a G20. Don't have many grizzled bears here on the Texas coast, but if I do run across one, I think turning my G20 10mm into a .480 Ruger Super Redhawk will pay off!

Hmmm, if I found myself in a situation where I was screwed, I don't know if a phillips screwdriver bullet would be the solution.

Put me in the heavy hardcast camp. Though I prefer 400 gr, .475" in dia @ 1200 fps.

I thought "Uncle Ted" killed a Buffalo with the 10mm?

I would have no problem shooting a black bear with a 10mm.

I've killed a truck load of feral hogs at the Ranch with my Glock 20 in 10mm. Some of them just over 400lbs. I figure they are probably as hard or harder to kill than your average size black bear.
I wouldn't think twice about shooting a black bear with my 10mm and the Buffalo Bore 220 gr LFN cast bullet loading.

You guys may want to explore 44-40 hard cast bullets for your glock. Less touchy on seating depth due to giving up a fuzz on the meplat. .....and uber cheap.

I have about 3k of them through my G20 and RIA combined.

Jumping aboard with a +2. That 220gr load makes a whole lotta gun out of a Glock.

While I probably wouldn't shoot a thousand rounds between cleanings, I'd certainly be MUCH more worried about whatever is trying to eat me than the chances of a Kaboom.

A 400 pound pig don't come at you with teeth and claws at 40 MPH either. I'll bet you aint just standing there just cool calm and collected when that bear has you in it's sights.
