Whats your thoughts on this ammo in reguards to effectiveness on big game? It's by far and large the most accurate factory ammo out of my hunting rifles expecially my 270. How about a 130grn for a cow elk hunt? Your thoughts please thx.

Ziggy,
I know you said "effectiveness on big game", but I wanted to comment on accuracy. I haven't found a factory box of ammo that will shoot a tighter group then my reloads ... Fusion comes dam close.

Apologies for not answering your question.

I don't have firsthand experience, but I asked about it for a 338 Federal a few years ago and one gun writer mentioned that it worked exceptionally well on a cull hunt for Kudu where they shot ~30 animals using the Fusions. In my view, a Kudu and a cow elk are quite comparable. Edit: they do shoot very well in my rifle.

It is always accurate, and does good damage while holding together. It does open up pretty wide and that limits penetration somewhat (though we've never recovered one from a deer).

On elk, I personally would step up to the 150 grain and hope that it opened less and penetrated more.

Haven't made a kill with them yet but I have high hopes. I've managed to pick up about a thousand 200 gr 338s from various sources. They are accurate in my 338-06s.

The terminal ballistics research website goes into detail and covers most all the common calibers, ammo and their intended purposes for each. And gives the history and origination for them as well, pretty cool stuff. He decribes the fusion ammo as being on par with the NP except when encountering heavy bone, he decribes the federal fusion as a step above. This was under the .270 write-up. I read this before posting and wanted to hear from some of you that have used the ammo.

Yeah I'm thinking 150 would be playing it safe.

The OP was asking about ammunition. You sound like you're speaking of BULLETS. Federal Fusions are not sold as component bullets. Please clarify.

I'm interested in this too, especially the 150s out of a 270win. I just got a pile of them from RMR, and hope to work up some loads soon.

Maybe they aren't sold openly, but some people have access to them. All I have were bought from contacts here at the fire. While I won't name one, his name should be obvious to those who use the classified as he often has good prices on large numbers of components
