Received some provenance for a 1915 250-3000 rifle I purchased late last year. This is a poor scan of an image taken in 1923 in Chapleau of the previous owner and his trophy black bear. I'm still trying to obtain a copy of the original photograph but hope to avoid beginning a new interest of collectables. wink

Very neat picture. I would imagine that really adds to the enjoyment of owning that particular rifle. Good luck getting the original also.

That's cool.

Do you know anything about the gentleman holding the gun?

Yes, Jeff.

99guy, I do know the name of gentleman who owned the rifle before me but without permission from his family I will not publish his name. The rifle was in his possession until he died. Sadly, his family chose to sell it for mere money. I foolishly took a small amount monies my mother left me after her passing and paid mere money for an inheritance gift. wink

In the future I hope to meet the man that let go of this century old little goodie. smile

[And yes I'm very pleased to leave it to my boys. The younger, who is twelve, has already claimed as his own. cool

Great to have a nice piece of history to call your own.

If you are passing it down to your boy you need a picture of YOU and the rifle standing next to a bear. grin

Rick,

I have been looking at real estate in New Brunswick where there is a surplus of black bear. Since 2008 US hunters wanting to kill trophy bear have not been visiting the province in the same numbers as before the last economic downturn thus bear harvest number are down though bear populations are said to be high.

A trophy bear should warrant a 300 before a 250 IMO, but if push came to shove I could be convinced to take a bear with a 250-3000 if the opportunity presented itself. smile

I agree with Rick It did the job 90+ years ago, it still will if you do your part. 100gr silver tips would work.

Oh well, people sell family heirlooms all of the time. While some may consider such behavior deplorable, there's a lot of collections that wouldn't exist if it didn't happen.

Bert,

Excellent to know that you now have some documented provenance for your rifle. Also interesting to know that there is a "muchyoungergrouser." grin You never spoke about that when last we spoke but it may well have happened after that. grin

Billu,

Here is the gun in question - a 1915 250-3000 with a Lyman peep sight and a 24" .410 barrel. Though the rifle bears signs of years of honest use and it still functions perfectly.

George has it right John. There is a "Young-grouser" [who you met but has grown into a strapping young man] and another younger son who in our household is affectionately called the "Bear." He is the one who claimed the this 250.
