I had 3 Durangos since the 1st year they were introduced. All had the V8 Hemi and I avgeraged about 13 mpg. Great for hauling and towing but not at the gas pumps. Latest vehicle I switched to Jeep Grand Cherokee with the Penstar V6 And am averaging 21 mpg . I pull my 5500 lb boat with it but thats pretty much maxed out, had I known I was going to get the heavy boat I,d have stayed with the Hemi.

Gas prices are going back down....
I try to stick with the basics, they do so well. Nothing fancy mind you, just plain jane will get it done with style. You want to see an animal drop right now? Shoot him in the ear hole. BSA MAGA

A friend had a Durango, ~3-4 years ago, POS, noisy, hard riding. He traded it before it was paid off.

My Durango the tranny blew at 63,000 miles. I'm at 238K on my Toyota and still original everything.

The '01 Durango we had blew the transmission at 24k miles, the rear end grenaded at 40k and again at 55k, it overheated if you looked at it wrong, there were door locks and electric window controls that never worked right, and don't even get me started on the [bleep] MPG.

We've had GMs for over 25 years. We're now on our third Suburban/Yukon and the current one has been a lemon. At 120,000 I've replaced the front end and valve/lifters. It's got electrical issues, the rear defroster doesn't work and now there's a rumbling noise not yet tracked down. I'm having a hard time wanting to buy another one. Thus the interest in the Durango.
This is a vehicle for the wife. No we don't tow with it. It simply has to be a reliable vehicle for her having plenty of room, comfort and AWL or 4WD.
Thanks for your opinions.

I drive beaters so am constantly looking for the next one. I've had Blasers, Broncos, Jeeps, and my crrent work truck is an Explorer. While I've never had a Durango, I know several who have, and I know what I read about them in the ads. Hard on gas, hard on transmissions, just kind of hard on stuff period. From talking to friends who've owned them, and from what I see in the ads, if you get over 150,000 rounds out of em, you're doing pretty good. My current beater (Explorer) has 230,000 miles on it and the tranny's still good. Leaks a little oil, has it's fair share of rattles, but starts every time I turn the key. It's gonna need tires within a year, and that will probably be when we dump it and get the next one. I've been driving this for 3 years now and haven't put any big money into it, but there comes a time when you're better off just walking away and getting the next one. I'm not to particular about what I drive as long as it's got 4 WD, so this is no big deal to me. Next one might be a Suburban, as I'm only working 7 miles from home now and can make do with a little lower gas mileage. I doubt that I average 500 miles a month on my work truck.

I had a 2000 I bought in 2001 with 43,000 miles on it. Drove it for 13 years with so few problems I called it the Durabledango. Got 16 mpg from day one, up to 18 on the freeway. Truly liked that vehicle.
But I will admit my mechanic said that was unusual.

I've had a couple of friends with them. As close to junk as you can get after about 50k. I would never buy one, and I ain't picky.
