It's not weight, it's length.
Example, an 85gr Barnes will be longer than some of your 100grain bullets and have more bearing surface.
You choices are limited to shorter bullets. Sometimes some of the 100's will work, like Speer, but I've not had one that has shot 100's worth a damn yet.
And, moreover, there's absolutely NO NEED to try. 1-14 twist, 87 grain pill, 3000 FPS, will do ANYTHING any hunter will ask it to do. Lotta hoop la over 13 grains...........

The bore has to be clean down to the steel, 'cause those copper jackets will foul a bore that is even a little rough almost instantly.
The load that I use in my 1-14" ROT Winchester/USRA 70 lightweight carbine is 39 grains of H4895. I drop down to between 35 and 37 grains of H4895 in my 1920s, 45, and 99F/G/R. For me, this has been a bullet that shoots better groups when push close to max.
It really shoots good groups at 3,700 fps from my 1-14" ROT 25 WSSM pdog rifle, better than in the 1-10" 25 WSSMs.

I would guess 1 in 10 twist All Savage rifles chambered in 250-3000 prior to 1960 were cataloged as being cut 1-14" ROT, while all Savage rifles chambered in 250-3000 since 1960 were cataloged as being cut 1-10" ROT. I have had good luck with the 75 grain Barnes Original X and believe that it may be the best deer bullet for 1-14" ROT .257" bore rifles yet to be sold in terms of velocity, penetration, and accuracy potential. Savage made at least one barrel in Chicopee Falls with a 1-10" twist. It's still sitting in the safe waiting for a trip to the smith to be fitted to an action. Never say never.

Which is why I specified "cataloged" rather than "made". I have a 1920 with a 1-11" ROT that shoots 117 grain Hornady RNs quite nicely.

ekp, have you tried factory Remington 100 gr Core loct's? If not, buy a box and try them, cheap way to find out, plus you have the extra brass. My 250 R shoots them very well and it was made in 1950. We were working up loads, all with 100 gr Core Loct's, a couple weeks ago. We had a real stiff wind blowing left to right. A couple loads had groups you could cover with your thumb nail. All groups were a little high and to the right, but very tight. We gave up because of the wind and the guy next to us. I kept flinching when he shot. I had several groups with 4 holes touching, and one flyer where I flinched. For $30 you will know if your gun will shoot a 100 gr bullit. I tried 117 Noslers and they key holed with a ten inch pattern, Joe.
I'm not greedy, I just want one of each.

Thanks for your suggestion. I am using Sierra's 87grain at the moment with R15. Have not been to the range yet. I will give the core locts a try. I really don't like Remington brass all that much. That is all I have at the moment. I just ordered PRVI brass in 22-250 to resize.

The last of the savage "TOP NOTCH" ammo was made by Remington, and they were round nose 100 grain bullets. They should shoot well in a savage !!!

When I was a kid, Remington/Peters offered a 100 grain RNCL load in addition to the current 100 grain PSP. Winchester offered an 87 grain PSP in addition to the current 100 grain ST.

I still have a box of the Remington RNCL cartridges. I wish Hornady would duplicate the bullet.

Don't know if they're generally available, but my local shop has some 87 gr Speers if you want to try them give me a shout. Danged overpriced at $36 a box, but there they are.
