I'm hoping to spend more time in mine this year, a S.O. 6 man, thus far I sure am liking it. It worked great on this ice fishing trip into the BWCA.

We went in for a SO 12-man a couple months ago.

Compared to the wall tent this goes up in a jiffy. One pole. Light weight (16 lbs tent/pole/stakes. 70d fabric + screens), and rides the wind very well.

That's a good photo for showing the interior space and head room for tall guys.

Yeah, the 12-man has some real walking-around room in it. I'm 6'3". The peak is about 9'8", and about 18' in diameter. A palace for the wife and I with cots, table, stove, etc. lots of room inside for firewood or whatever.

Probably end up getting another eventually, 4-man or something, for foot-mobile use.

That's a slick setup there Shane. I've got a Golite 5 man that works alright for UL backpacking, but that would be far more comfortable. Ive been thinking about doing something larger for car camping, and that would surely do the trick. Looks like it was a pretty nice day in your neck of the woods!

Carl, yeah that was in Feb. It was in the 40s or so. I waited until after sundown to fire up the stove and it was roasty toasty in there, outside temp in the 20s. I only stoked it lightly due to the dry grass underneath. I'd pile some rocks under it out in the field, to shield the ground from excess heat.

We will just use this near the truck. The smaller ones with a Ti stove look pretty sweet for backpacking. I'm kind of mulling the BT-2, Cimarron, or 4-man tipi for backpacking. For minimal weight, it looks like a guy could get a BT-2 and medium Ti stove for under 5 lbs total.

That Cimarron looks pretty similar in size to my SL5, which is a nice size and weight for backpacking. All my pictures involving it are on a computer that's currently out of commission, or I'd contribute to the thread properly. I really need to build a stove for it one of these years...

I was thinking the Cimarron looked like a pretty good combination of size/weight/footprint. The canopy is only about 2 lbs. If I go that route I'll get a stove jack installed for extra versatility.

On that trip they had some new goats along as extras, getting some trail time in.

I need to get a few Tipi's. I love a wall tent for truck camping, but hate set up. i'm usually solo.Shane's tipi looks like the perfect replacement for a wall tent.

And a light weight tipi would be awesome to get into after hunting all day, versus the AKTO that makes me feel too damn confined.

I shy'd away from light weight/backpacking tipi's because they are floorless, but using one with a nest would fix that..I have a phobia with ticks, for a good reason..spotted fever is no joke.

We have a 12x14 wall tent that we are keeping. But as you say it takes some time and effort to pitch solo or with the wife. Well over 100 lbs of canvas and framing. Then if the canvas is wet/frozen it's a bitch to work with, and dry out properly.

When we pitch or take down the tipi we still are amazed at how fast and easy it goes. Easy for an overnighter, or even day use if you want some quick shelter.

Outstanding Randy... when I think of a tipi with a small stove I think of winter in Northern Minnesota and Calvin Rustrum. Your picture closely matches my mental image!

The boys up in Alaska have some good photos and video of their tipi's. One in particular with "stid2677" and "las" show them in a sustained heavy Kodiak Is.
windstorm with nary an issue.
Not having a floor to worry about is a bonus too along with some heat.
Good to have choices.

This is an SL 4 that I modified to use a T-goat cylinder stove and added a sil-nylon sod skirt. I've been using it for my stone sheep hunting since 2009. Very light weight setup and so far no issues, except finding a porcupine hanging out in it during last years sheep hunt, always take a good look inside with a headlamp before climbing in at the end of a long day:)

Kifaru 4 man with med stove with lots of fresh snow , 20 der F a little tight with 3 guys + gear 3 nights burnt lots of wood condensation was a major problem but we all survived , just don't ask me about the 190 class Mule deer that I turn down on that trip .

Anything with "SL" in the name was from Golite; they went bankrupt. The Mega mid was from Black Diamond, it was discontinued.
