If I said retirement sucked!

Just got back from the killing fields, central Montana version. It was a day for the .222s....... grin

Had to go "Old School" on them!

Switched to the LVSF in a deuce and got a couple pics of it on the killing fields....

It was a pretty good day, with 400 rounds expended. Likewise pretty good shot-to-kill ratio grin

ingwe, I was wondering, what is a pretty good shot to kill ratio???
How far do you usually shoot at gophers??

I should use my range finder more.. I just shoot off the hood of my old 85 Toyota.. Our numbers of gophers are still way down..But when I was shooting today, I would say I only averaged 60-65 percent.. When we were in Montana, I had 50 .223's loaded with 55 grain Sierra HPBT's.. My average there with those bullets was maybe 85 percent.. When I switched to 50 gr. Sierra BK, my average dropped back down.. I doubt 70 percent.. I shot maybe 30 with my Swift and .22-250 AI just because I had them.. I average with them was much higher than the .223 with 50 gr..
I am sure wind, etc. make a day to day difference..

Your experience pretty much mirrors mine. A so/so day ( wind, wrong load, loose nut on the trigger...) we figure 65%...a good day is 85%....but we have had strings of 50-100 shots that were 95% plus...but overall a good average is 85%....a real good one is 90%
Truth be known most shots at gophers are 150- Yds or less.We routinely shoot them out to 250 or so...unless I have the .204...it will score a number of 300 yards kills in a day.

Since you killed the first and second ever gophers with that LVSF it has killed a few more with 1500 + rounds down the tube thats easily 1K gophers. I replaced the original scope with a Leupy VX-II 3x9 and starting loading 50 grainers as the 1 in 14 twist likes them slightly better. It is easily my favorite gopher getter...

76, Speaking of 52 gr. Speer hollow points.. I shot thousands of them over the years and still have about 4000 left.. One batch was horrible for copper coating the barrel on 2 different rifles.. I eventually sent some samples back to Speer.. They said the problem with the bullet was the jacket was not made correctly.. No problem, and they sent me a new 1000 pack.. Tried 50 of them in my .223 yesterday, same problem, but not as severe.. Stuck the rest on the shelf.. Too bad, it was a cheap, accurate, deadly bullet..

Problems with PB....

But on the bullet topic I loved those Speer 52s but recently came into a batch of Hornady Amax 52s labeled specifically for 1 in 14 twists, and the worked REALLY good! laugh
