I've run across a post-'64 88 in .284. It's been hunted with, carried in a saddle scabbard, some dings and scratches, etc., probably about 80% condition. It appears to be in good mechanical shape and probably hasn't been shot a great deal. Cheap scope of little or no value. Any rough estimates as to a fair price as described? I have no photos. Thanks

Around here, it takes a pretty nice post 64 284 to get to $900-$1000….an 80% gun could get close to that but will probably take a while to get it. Probably sells pretty quick for $700-$800

In my neck of the woods we see very few in the 88's , I have held a whopping total of 2 model 100 in .284 winchester, I hunted for many years with a very accurate cold bore 100 in 308 ( post 64 red W in grip cap), I was lucky with the gun having a good trigger! I have zeroed several for friends that had grunter triggers and one that was owl sh%t slick! I gave mine to my Dad and took his old rem 742 ( in .243 win) away as we, me as I always set the guns up went with a very accurate but would pure pencil hole shots on nice whitetails and I got tired of tracking! Dad was not brain stem or neck shooter but put it in the boiler room a tad high ,for the life of me I cannot remember the 95 gr bullet he was shooting but they were zipping thru and the deer were doing a rodeo buck or hunch, kick and running just far enough downhill with little or no blood trail to be a pain! One I found several days later via the turkey vultures and was sick over loosing the fine whitetail,Dads stand was not a bean patch but a 60-70 yard shot... Long story short every deer Dad shot with my model 100 in 308 was bang flop go get the truck, let the air out, 165 grain hydrostatic CNS shock, O BP dead! Im ashamed to admit but I just had the recall done last year as I always went with the if its not broke don't fix and it was one of those lucky soul , nailed a freezer buck on a to hot for time of year first trip in woods gun! I have noticed both the 88's and 100's seem to be regional favorites in different parts of country guns. I passed on a model 100 in .284 win when the guy would not let me have a 2,(two) day on my dime inspection on a low sell count GB seller. I took the time to call the seller and he was very vague as to a refinish as the internet photos looked too good, as in better than factory mint good! very best WinPoor
Side note, I have been very lucky with accurate Winchesters in general BUT every post gun with red W in grip cap have been extra nice shooters, I think it is from 65' or 66' IIRC , An old time Winchester guy told me one time it was due to getting the steel and hammer forging of the barrels down pat... who knows, has anyone else noticed this ?

I had a M100 in 284. I bought it at a gun show for $700 while at Cabela's and sold it for $1200. I never did get to shoot it and kinda wish I had kept it instead. A fiend has a M100 in 243 and it only shoots one brand of ammo accurately. I have never really warmed up to a semi auto in any rifle or shotgun.

Cabela's regularly has Winchester 88s in 308 in the Gun Library.

I don't like the ergs of the pistol grips, too straight for my tastes, of the 88s, so I have only kept four in 284 as collectables.

The 16 pre-'64 Winchester 70s that I kept from my Father's collection are in 250 Savage, 257 Roberts, 7x57, 300 Savage, and 35 Remington.

Sounds like your father had quite a nice collection. I hope you have sons and daughters to pass the legacy down to the next generation.

He had around 250 when he died in 2000, over 150 that were NIB. I traded most of them for a section of farm ground in 2001.

My kids aren't interested in firearms, so I will probably sell them when the kids are through college and we move to Colorado.
