Plan to shoot 55 gr Sierra hpbt,(I've got 500 of'em).
Not interested in wringing it out to lightspeed velocities, but if it shoots better at top velocity then so be it.
Rifle is a Ruger 77 older tang safety style 26" heavy barreled target/varmint. (Hasn't been shot much)

So any help/advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

AA 2700 with a BR2 was the most consistent with 55's but 2700 has been a little tough to find of late so I went back to my standby of H-380 and WLR or CCI standard or a BR2 as all three gave good results with 380.

Ramshot Hunter and WLR's work great with 55's in the Swift, but Hunter is unobtainium these days, and some people avoid WLR's because they've leaked and etched a few bolt faces.

IMR4895 and CCI 200's work pretty well too....

tough to beat imr 4064 or Re 15,and Br-2's--deadly

We have been shooting H4895 and cci 200's.. Also 3031.. both work very well.. 4064 is I guess the classic Swift powder, but have less than a pound so I haven't used it much lately.. But it also worked very well..

I posted a similar question not too long ago.
Since then I've worked with my 24" ruger swift a bit.

IMR 4064 has been the best I have tried for accuracy and velocity so far. I played with varget, 4350 and RL 15. RL 15 was the next best performer for me.

The best thing about 4064 aside from performance is that its available as opposed to a bunch of other powders.

37.5 grains of 4064 is where I'm at with 3740 fps and 4 shot groups at or under 3/4".

Used 4064 for years but ran out and tried other powders.
Like the newer powders a lot better.
In order of preference:
Reloader 17
H4350
2000 MR
All with 210M Primers.

Hunter was promising with 215 primers but velocity was low. Will have to try WLRs and up the charge a bit.

I would like to try the ramshot powders when they are available again. sure would be more user friendly than metering logs of 4064.

A lot of people like H414 but after using it in other rounds I found it to be rather temp sensitive and dirty compared to extruded powders.

Anybody know how accurate 2700 is in the temp sensitivity dept.?

I've had 2 Swift's and they both shot well(great) w/414 & CCI200's. Didn't have a chrono back then so didn't worry about temp sensitivity. Killed coyotes winter, spring, summer or fall! Oh, I only used 60 gr. bullets,
for the same reason you want to use 55's.

Yep, temp sensitivity doesn't matter if point-of-impact is the same!

Sand, Whatever bullet your rifle likes w/ H-414 and RP primers. Mine is 43 gr. w/ 50 V max in exactly the same rifle as yours but on it's 2nd barrel. It has an old 12 X Leu. sighted +2 at 100 and 200 and the coyote had better be at least 375 before you hold air- Muddy

Thanks John. I knew Win. 760 was the same as 414 but had no idea 2700 was.

I still have some 414 left and may end up giving it a try one of these days but I hope to hold out for Hunter and Big Game. All the pluses of ball powders but none of the drawbacks so it seems.

I know I sure like TAC in my 223's and 6br, It changed the way I viewed ball powders

I have to agree with you about it being dirty, but still my go to with the swift and 55's

Not necessarily in this order because I've found they all do well: H4895, Varget, and H414. I use 210M primers but others may do just fine.

As for the lack of temperature resistance regarding H414 - there may be something to that according to others, but I haven't been able to tell.

I never had a lot of luck with 55s in my 3 swifts, much better with 50s. One exception. One gun liked 44 grains of IMR 4831 under a 55 grain ballistic tip ... probably used Fed 210M primers, definitely WW cases.

The one I had that I shot the longest lived on 50 grain ballistic tips and 43.5 grains of H380, again, WW cases and Fed 210M primers. Half inch groups at 3987 fps average. It was SERIOUSLY hard on whatever got in front of it.

What about IMR 4166? I find no data nor experience but something close to IMR4064 might be expected to do well in a Swift?

Agreed 2700 and other popular powders do well enough.
