I think your 541X will be a Standard class rifle, not legal for hunter class. Most people I know that choose to shoot Remingtons shoot the 541 T or S. That way they can carry one gun and shoot all day.

My current rifle is a McMillan stocked Anschutz 54 Sporter, but any of the 1700 family of rifles are good.

The scope you use will make more difference than the rifle. Because we shoot at small targets set at four different distances without chance to rezero the scope has to have precise and repeatable clicks to be competitive. I use to have a Leupold EFR with a custom target dot but sold it like an idiot. Now I have one of the FX3 25x "Silhouette Leupold Dot" scopes. Its alright, but I miss being able to turn the scope down to 16x when I get nervous.

A fixed FX3 12x with Leupold dot and target turrets is a good place to start.

Looking forward to the first match of the year at Atglen on the 26th. I've been shooting a Cooper for several years and last year upped the scope to a Nikon 12X. I don't take it seriously and don't practice so likely stuck as an A/B shooter but that's fine and it's a great group of folks that shoot there. Very family oriented and if you want to come shoot they'll figure out a way you can compete with what you have.

I've shot a lot of different rifles and settled on a custom 40x right now it's topped with a 36x leupold. Mrs shoots a custom stocked cz452 with 6-18 leupold.

That 6-18 is a sleeper silhouette scope. Less expensive than the big EFR but with the same turrets.

Kind of wish I had gone that route instead of the 25x, that way I could use it for varmints or small game too.

Yes I shoot lots 6-18's but picked up my 36x on armslist local , it was a 24x sent to permire boosted to 36 but bought it for 100 bucks and it works perfect . But would trade it fir a new 30x silhoutte model within 1/2 min dot

My 541-X has 20 or 25 MOA rail and 10X Super chicken on it, shot it for the first time today, have to find some decent grouping ammo and get a trigger swap. Didn't group WW T-22 Target all that well at 50 or 100. A lot of that was rest I was using and horrendous trigger.

shoudl be same trigger as Rem 788 which Timney? still has a model of?

I too need to buy a couple of 788 and 541 triggers. The 540s IIRC where much adjustable...

Yes Sir I found that out yesterday after searching around a little. I guess a Timney is inevitable

Means I need to hurry up and buy a few for the 788s and a couple for the 541s... wife and I used 541s with the trigger tweaked a bit, but it sure was not a good thing with silhouette.... of course we didn't really want light as it was for cross training service rifle anyway.

I meant to throw mine on the scales at the gun club ,but forgot.

They definitely are heavy.

I am not in any big rush I am not a huge fan of the way my mitts fit the stock so may do some whittling and if that happens it's going to lose some weight for sure!

Good thing for what you pay for one, and its a wood stock, you can whittle or add bondo and shape as needed.

I don't recall overall weight limits for the guns, but IIRC, hunter was fairly light but there was some open division where I don't think it mattered??

10 lbs 2 oz for open and 8 1/2 lbs for hunter. I've never seen anyone weigh them for the matches I shoot but as I said, Atglen is a very inviting match who would rather see people (especially families) come have a good time than nitpick. I have no idea what my Cooper 57M weighs but it's likely close to the 8 1/2 and I just shoot it in both hunter and open.

Sounds like your matches are like the ones we went to, they'd rather have folks have fun, than worry about the technicalities so much, that was reserved for "registered" matches and the like.

California State Smallbore Championship the weekend of May 16th and 17th. They do and will weight rifles and test trigger pulls.

Yep, I see a lot of rifles at matches with stickers that show they have been checked for national events. As I said, ours are more casual but I can't imagine anyone would cheat for a little pin.

Tomorrow at Atglen supposed to be 39 going to 61 degrees. We just had a sleet and snow squall come through here.

If you have a .22 rifle then just show up at a Match.

All our Matches are NRA sanctioned; but we will let anyone shoot any SAFE rifle, your score will not count.

I would assume most Matches would be run the same.

Some twelve year old will beat you anyways!!!

The 541T and 541S are good rifles. I don't know what a 541X is.
