Howdy all,

Today I picked up a stainless 700 short action / standard boltface mountain rifle in a first generation TI B&C stock. A buddy of mine used the takeoff barrel for another project so I would like some recommendations on how to proceed with this build. The use would be for PA deer hunting and just general shooting fun. Loonies out there please let me know how you would proceed. Thanks so much!

A) Barrel contour
B) Brand of barrel
C) Chambering
D) Bullet choice and throating
E) Keep factory trigger or aftermarket
F) Anything else you would recommend!

Happy shooting!

I made up a 7mm-08 for Pa. deer hunting, and I shoot it quite often at water jugs here in the west..Had it cut with a 21 in #5 Douglas air ga. It shoots numerous loads very well.. Probably the farthest shot I made with it in that country was 230 yards on a big doe.. 120 gr. Nosler BTBT.. I have shot antelope with it here.. My step grandson killed a buck antelope with it at close 400.. I would have had him use something else if we would have known that is the shot he would get.. For hunting in Pa. I had a good time with it. The camp is being sold, so that is ended.. I doubt I use it much for western hunting.. But it was fun there..

I liked the 21" fairly heavy barrel.. It shot well and handled fine in the woods.. I think if I were buying more barrels I might again try a Shilen, Hart or one of the other top makers..

Spin on a 20" .308 or 7-08 from a M7 takeoff and fill arks !

Tune or replace that trigger, but don't scrimp on glass !

1:8 Pacnor, 260 Rem, Mtn contour if you like. Throated to kiss 123 Scenars.

Personally, I'm done with BC Ti's and mountain barrels. If I ever get the itch it'll get a mag contour in a McSwirly Classic.

I bought a used 30-06 stainless mountain rifle a few years ago for $300 and put it in a Bansner stock from Brownells and Talleys and a 2.5x8 scope and ended up with a light weight, accurate and inexpensive very good all around rifle. Factory barrel shoots very adequately.

Put a factory sporter barrel takeoff on it, in your choice of chambering.

Or an after market barrel at about the same contour. I put a 24" MR contour Pac-nor in 6.5x257AI on my mountain rifle and still had to hollow out the butt a bit to get the balance right(for me.) An 8 twist 6.5 barrel chambered to .260R or 6.5CM or a 9 twist .25 cal in .250 Savage or .257 Roberts (you could AI either) would be about perfect.

For deer and general shooting fun, one would be hard pressed to deny the merits of a 243 win for that purpose. Low recoil, easy to find components, easy to reload for and kills deer better than the Internet crowd will ever acknowledge.

A. #2 contour 1-8" twist @ 22"
B. Rock
C. 243 win (don't need to AI it)
D. Throated for 105 Amax or 105 HPBT to mag length
E. Factory trigger tuned or a Timney (save some money here)
F. Wyatts mag well extender to get some added OAL

7-08, 120 or 140 B-tips are the jam plus you can run 162 A-Max and that does not suck. 22 inch Rem sporter barrel set back or custom tube throated to the pill you like best.

Go forth and kill chit

Hey Passport, those are some beauties there. Have you made any posts in the past detailing any of those rifles and specs? I'd love to hear about them.

To the other posters, thank you for the many different options that you have recommended, I'll just have to pick something sooner or later but have a good push in the right direction.

Thank you

Here's a recent project I did with a SS 700 SA. You could use the TI stock instead of the McMillan Compact.
