Well, LBK was right, it does not specify that the sling eyes and tang sight were factory original. Ratz. But I do think it confirms that the scope was about as original as it can get. It was accepted at the Utica warehouse on August 20, 1912 and shipped out to the original owner the same day, August 20, 1912. The original owner, The Malcolm Rifle Telescope Co. Joe

That great news! Very nice!

Now you just need to find some old articles or pictures of Malcolm displays or ads with a Savage 1899 in it, and you can claim it's yours! grin

Wow, that I think provides a high degree of confidence in the scope being installed by Malcom. Makes you wonder if it was a customer request, with the work being farmed out to Malcolm.

It wasn't farmed out to Malcom. Malcom was the original purchaser.

You need to find a 1911/1912 Malcolm catalog.

Here's a 1911 ad:

Wow, that's pretty nice, even though a year early. Several other pictures I've seen had the rear scope mount, mounted farther back, behind the ejector port. In that picture it's mounted exactly like mine, Joe.

I considered that Malcolm may have outright bought the rifle, but did they ever sell firearms? I truly don't know the answer. I was speculating that they mounted the scope, and who knows, it may have gone on to the original purchaser after that. But as I said, I really do not know. Just speculating.

Joe,
FWIW, going through factory letters and discovered that I own #986XX which was originally shipped to Malcolm Telescope Mfg. Co. also. Gun is 32-40 cal. and was produced April 24, 1909 and shipped two days later. It is a 1899-A Standard Weight Rifle with a 26" round barrel.
Unfortunately, it does not have a Malcolm scope attached and does not show any signs of one ever being attached........congrats on your great find!

John, that's cool to know. Now I'm wondering if you could walk into Malcolm's shop and pick stuff off the wall and try it out. Looks like more research, Joe.

cmhjohn, should I mention that an 1899-A in 32-40 is real high on my want list. I actually have 3 boxes of vintage 32-40 ammo waiting for a rifle to mount over them, Joe.

I have not been around much lately so may have missed it... any chance that you could post some pictures of your gun... especially the mount location details.

thanks

Thanks for posting that up for me. I was going to go back to my photo bucket. Sometimes things are just too easy for me to figure out.

Since the rifle lettered as being sold to Malcolm, I'd say that the mounts are in the proper place. If you want a close up of the front mount, let me know,, Joe.

I thought you may have meant the front scope mount, if so here's a pic of it. It's drilled to the barrel. The cutout in the center of the block is so you can use the tang sight and still see the front sight, and it has adjustment lines in it, Joe.

Nope, not gonna try till I get up on the farm with Gary. Plus, so far, I only have 7 vintage rounds of Sears and Roebuck my buddy found in his "old stuff" ammo locker. I do have a couple hundred 30-30 empties, a set of 250 dies, 25-35 dies, but still need the 22HP dies to squeeze them down all the way. And I'm broke. Might try selling a couple of my old chainsaws.

Here's a pic of the front sight. For being as beat up as the seller listed this gun to be, the front sight is in pretty good shape, Joe.

oh! I don't have a climbin lyman and did not realize that the rear portion actually required a hole... I guess I though it just held down by the pressure of leverage from the forward screw.

So I guess my gun was set-up for the malcolm!

Are you going to get it lettered to see if it sold to Malcolm? Cmhjohn has an 1899 A in 32-40 that lettered to Malcolm. We might come up with a new sub category of collectables, Joe.

About a month ago there was a mount with all of the pieces on ebay. I think it was a by it now sale, not auction, at $500. I forgot to watch it. I don't know how to do a search for old sales. If it didn't sell he may take an offer, Joe.

use the advanced search and you can find closed auctions. I think it goes back 30 days - couldn't find a timer period selection box though.

found a couple of scopes but no mounts.

Well, there's your next venture, Mike. Building repro Malcolm mounts as an adjunct to your Lightfoot Mount. Could be your path to fame, glory, and untold riches!

It WAS an auction with a starting bid of $500. It was a buy it now, for $800.00

Hmmm. That one has only one barrel mounting screw hole. Perhaps intended for use on a lower recoiling rifle?

You're correct about the one screw hole. But, I had to think about the recoil thing for a bit. Your HP is the only one I've ever shot, and to get less recoil than that, I'd have to drop down to my 22 Crossman, or maybe my Daisy Red Ryder. That would be something, a Daisy Red Ryder with a Malcolm Rough Rider. I think some folks have too much spare time on their hands. I better go find something to do, Joe.
