I've been using 168g Amaxes in my 308 Win and shooting out to 750+ yards. I am going to stretch this further with more shooting.

I am a real novice at LR shooting. Every time I take the rifle out I am learning a good deal however.

Many speak highly of the 155g Scenar for this sort of work because of a good BC and light weight so it can be driven hard and fast.

It would seem the new 155g Sierra Tipped MK might compare very favourably in this regard. Has anyone had any experience with this new bullet?

Any thoughts?

Unless you have a POS scope with no adjustment, it doesn't matter practically speaking.

Sierra 155 palma, Vs. 155 Scenar
Both launched at 2850 fps from sea level, @ 59 degrees; out to 1,000 yards
The scenar requires 0.4 mil less drop.

It's not about drop. It's about wind, the best wind callers can still be made a fool.

Ok I get what you are saying, but I'd have thought a sleeker bullet with a higher BC doing more speed would have been better than a slower, dumpier one?

I am talking about the new Tipped Match King, which quotes what I believe is a higher BC than both the Palma and the Scenar.

Thanks.

Won't a more slippery, more fast projectile help in that respect though?

I ran a lot of 155.5 Bergers instead of the heavies in .308. They were better in the wind to about 800 yards and then the heavies took over. At the short range stuff, under 600 yards I felt they were substantially better.

Comparing the TMK, Scenar or Berger would be a matter of what I could get a steady supply of.

Grab your phone, go to the app store and buy "Shooter", by Sean Kennedy.

Your 168 Amax Vs the 155 TMK to 1k. With a 10 mph crosswind.

168 can launch past 2800, but let's use a start of 2750fps
10.6 mils up. 2.9 mils right

155TMK @ 2850, same down from Max.
8.9 mil up 2.3 mils right

that small amount isn't significant to me.

On paper, the TMK has the slight ballistic edge, so if you are limited to a 155gr bullet, the new TMK might be a nice option for under 1k and the potential for better terminal performance on game.

If you are looking to stretch your range as far as the 308 will throw them, then the small BC improvement won't be significant, as it's still pretty low for a true long-range projectile...actually so is the 308.

Past 750yds I'd be looking at the Berger 185 Juggernaut or 215 Hybrid, or the 208 Amax.

Thanks Darkker, VSC and TC. At this stage 750 is as far as I've gone. I get about 2750fps pretty comfortably out my 26 inch barrel with the 168 Amax.

The 168g Amax is the only bullet I have used thus far, and I have about 800 of them left at present. Just weighing up the options.

I can't see me pushing much past 1000y with this outfit. I'm not a good enough shot at the moment. Isn't that far enough anyway?

I just ran the 168 amax vs the 155 scenar, both of which I used the Litz tested bc's. Same speeds, 2750 and 2850 @ my current conditions. I used moa, 1000 yard correction with 10mph wind.

168 - 36.22 drop/ 10.10 wind

155 - 32.42 drop/ 9.13 wind

Thats a pretty significant difference to me.

I'm fresh out of Scenars so should know pretty soon.

BC Difference b/t the two is too small to matter. Shoot the one that performs best at the distance your shooting. I agree with VarmintsInc, having shot the 155 Scenar in competition out to 1000y. The 155 Scenar does not do well past about 850-900. If past 900 is the goal, I'd look at the 175TMK/178 Amax.
