Wife and I have managed to get out the last two weekends astride the beasts.

About 4 hours last weekend and 5 1/2 this weekend. Three out of 4 days on the beach, and each side of the river mouth. Measured right about 28 miles for the combined 4 days. That's the most I've gotten this early in the season.

Minus tide today so lots of beach.


Been getting out?

All these beautiful weekends and I have yet to throw a leg over one yet. Still nursing my left ankle from a nasty spill I took on the ice in late Feb. Doctor says I need a hip replacement on my left hip also. Was always good for around 150- 200 miles a year. Nags are going to get off easy this year.

I have been getting out about once a week and riding 4-5 miles. These are only around home or in County Open Space locations.

The mountains ,where I can do 10-15 miles at a time won't be open for another two months at least with all the snow pack

A little bit. Doing more ground work than anything. The rain during the Spring set me back some and when I could have rode I was shooting.

I told myself this is the week to "get back in the saddle".

Going to put neatsfoot oil on a new bridle tonight and get my tack in order.

This is the week I will get at it again.

You know, I feel so beat up on my left side, I'am considering having some one ride my nag before I get on. Thats something I thought I would never do.

The beach here is a fun place to ride. Of course you better be on your game when the horses see the wide open beach and the wind is blowing 30 knots. <grin>

With several Mack trucks, several older pieces of caterpillar equipment and a big box of well used snapon tools. The moterhead novelty wore off a long time ago.

Yes, been getting out, mostly checking the cows that were calving. Soon as corn planting is finished there will be time for trail rides with family and neighbors.

The horses and I excercise a bit through the winter months, too. Some of it is indoors.

Silly me, thought this was a topic about democrats sticking with Hillary.

What do you use for footing in your indoor?

Mebbe when things settle a bit I should get on one of the daughters horses she's got here on the place. SIL was on his last weekend. And doing some work on their hooves. She's got two good saddle horses here. And a mare that with some time and work would probably be a better animal than the other two!

Our area was so slick with ice this past winter, we didn't even get to haul the Christmas tree with the horses. had to pull it in by hand which truly sucked!

Does it dust bad?

There are times when a dusty haze occurs.

I sold my mule a couple weeks ago, just didn't have the time anymore with all the overtime I'm working. Not Saddlesores age yet but old enough that it was starting to tell on me when I did ride a few hours.
Place sure seems empty now.

Riding isn't a problem. It is getting off and walking after 3 hours in the saddle that gets tough.

Exactly what I meant, sometimes if I bailed off too quick my knees would about give out. I hike 3 1/4 miles up and down hill most every night after work and still had trouble sometimes when dismounting.

Really like that setup round oak!.....super nice.

Some, but not near as much as our horses need...
Ill behaved a lot of the time, but can't really blame them
when they're only ridden once a week at best.
Went on one overnight camping trip,

Big group ride the next day, my daughter's horse decided to lay down and wallow in a mud hole with her - everybody thought it was hilarious, except my Dad - she was riding his Tucker saddle, saddlebags, and wool blanket...

That's a couple of nice looking horses. You'd like it here. Lots of places with horses. Kinda like it here myself. I'd get horses but they'd want to take turns with who get's to ride who!!!

Hey all! Long time, no post.

I finally got myself my own horse! Well, he sort of "got" me, I guess. He's a big (16.2), older, Thoroughbred ex-racehorse whose former owners abandoned him at my old barn.

He hadn't been ridden in a year, and had a prior reputation of dumping riders out on the trail. Not from bucking, but from bolting uncontrollably and leaving riders in the dust. The barn owner asked me to work with him a bit before he took him to auction, and after a few weeks I decided I wanted to keep him. I started paying his board and working him out as much as possible, and he's really come around! His name is Remington.

He's taken me through the Uintas, through Antelope Island, and plenty of local trails. He can still be a little "looky" at times, but now he just jumps sideways. No more mile-long bolts!

Here he is at Antelope Island, and at a parade in Kaysville (I am leading on my sister's black grade mare, my buddy in the white hat is riding him). Remington was the only horse big enough for him!

So happy to see your horses--I'll be posting more of our miles this summer, too!

That's a tall one for sure!

There are plenty of 'boogers' in the woods to a horse unfamiliar anything but a track or arena. his mind will come around.

You know how to do a one-rein stop?

We've been pretty busy branding here the last few weeks. It's been a rainy spring so we've been having to sneak in small bunches in between the showers. This was earlier today. Today started out nice but we had to wait awhile to let the corrals dry out a little from the last few days. But start soon enough to beat the rain.

Those are my kids they are almost 12 and 8. We'd been sorting here.











We use Nord forks. So you heel a calf with both hind legs then drag them by a guy holding the fork. As the calf goes by you slip the forks over their neck and then the horse holds them against the forks. Then the ground crew goes to work on them.

So in this pic they've just gotten done and I'm starting to turn my horse to the left to drag the calf out of the pen. And running a little rope to give the calf some slack so the forks will come off.





This is after we were done. I'm not sure if this was cowboys and indians or the Kentucky Derby.

Work for you folks, but would surely be fun to do sometime!

Not a good year for me with riding, But I am going to try to get out more starting this week. Daughter is a senior, getting ready for college and working. She doesn't have a car so Dad's taxi is keeping me busy. No sports for the kids, but both in FFA so have days they need to be picked up after school. I get out of work at 2:30 so I'm elected to do it. wife gets home about 5:30. On top of that, my 14 YO son hates horses and loves fishing so we go out on the boat once during the week and once on the weekend to fish. Concerts, awards ceremonies...... Then there is normal home and barn maintenance. I'm looking forward to school getting out so I have some more time!!!

I did spend a week in Arizona near Kingman hunting lion on horseback. Awesome!!! want to move there.

Yessir, I surely do! We practiced it quite a few times in the arena before I took him on a real mountain ride.

I tried it a few miles in to the ride directly after he "smelt a barre in the woods," a la Davey Crockett.

I slid my hand down the rein and stared to turn him on his haunches.

He took that as a signal to kick it up a gear, headed around the "Clubhouse Turn," and didn't stop for about a mile. Or, you know, 8 furlongs, I guess.
