Who uses a 458 wm for hunting Moose and or Bear? I just got a deal on a mdl. 70 Super Express (push feed) in very nice shape. Opinions on this rifle and or the 458 wm much appreciated. Erich

Haven't taken game with a 45 bore but so long as you avoid the soft 45-70 black powder velocity pills, pick something in the range of 350-500 grs, put it where it counts, and game over.
I will say 350's @ 2400-2500 fps recoil on par with a 375 H&H and are worth considering as they are certainly ample medicine for AK game.

Had a pard that owned one of those beasties, I can't remember what loads he was shooting through it but I can tell you this much, recoil was m*%^$@#!!
We fired 3 rounds through it when he sighted it in, I shot 1, he shot 1 and our buddy shot 1. Later that year he killed a 9'6" brown bear with it. He was using open sights and shot the bear at close to 200 yards. Bang flop was the result and he sold that rifle shortly after the hunt.
That's ok, I'll ass shoot a dink.

I have a tang safety Ruger RS that I'm fond of. Barrel is cut to 20" and it's bedded into a HighTech stock. Parkerized metal with a Leupold 1.5-5 perched on top. 350gr TSX at 2450 and 350gr Speer MagTips at 2500 are all I shoot out of it. 500s kick too much and don't offer the trajectory that I like. I shot a bear with a 510 soft point Winchester factory load and a deer on kodiak with a handloaded 350 Hornady, both died and right now. The Hornady shed it's jacket on the entry side between the skin and the ribs, I shot up all that I had left and don't use them anymore.
It's a killer and the lighter bullets make it more shootable and much more versatile IMO. Unless I was guiding bear hunters I don't think I would by one now, probably stick with a 375, but I got a great deal on mine and have used and enjoyed it.

I never thought the 458 win mag recoiled that bad. Wife thought same.
Now a Lott? I have no clue on... 460 wtby we both thought was a bit much, but nothing like one damnable 378 wtby we shot a few times. Maybe me twice, she once at a squirrel and that was about it...
Always wanted one for some reason, a 458 but the ones I picked up where so heavy it scratched that off the list.

Every 458 I ever tangled with kicked like pissed off mule. So I never had the desire to own one myself. I have a buddy who shoots one and he can run a box of shells through it with no issues personally I think their is something wrong him LOL
Then STFU. The rest of your statement is superflous bullshit with no real bearing on this discussion other than to massage your own ego. Suckin' on my titties like you wanted me.

Erich I have used mine now for over 30 years and used it on moose at well past 400 yards and brown bears at well under 4 yards and the more I play around and use other big bores the more I come to appreciate the standard 458.

I got my first one as a Christmas present in 1983, a tang safety Ruger 77. Shot only handloads through it and sold it when I moved to Texas.
Finally bought another .458 WM from Ken Howell that he had built by Iver Henriksen on a Mauser action. Sweet rifle! I shoot everything from Hornady 350 gr @ 2300fps (accuracy load) to 520gr "Government Bullets" intended for the Sharps @ 1850fps. The WW factory 500 & 510 gr ammo shoots OK, but not good as my handloads.
I love the caliber. Get a stock that fits you and you'll never be sorry you bought one.

Ed what Ed said....so happens the stock on his 458 fits me well enough and i was able to ring steel with it off hand with no discomfort for a few shots....

The .458's are a hammer that ends drama. I have achieved 5 feet of penetration using the obsolete 400gn Barnes X bullets and now use 350's for alround use, 450gn TSX's for potentially dangerous situations and jump to the 550gn Woodleigh for heavy game in thick stuff.
Tried just about everything in .458 caliber in a bunch of .45/70's, .458's and the .460 Weatherby but my only disappointment was the 500gn Hornady which is no match for the Barnes offerings for bigger game. There is also a 400gn Woodleigh Weldcore that could be interesting on moose and bear though I have not used them in the US yet.

you know when you touch one off

Hopefully WaterRat will chime in also with his experience but I can assure you that as bad as the recoil may seem from the bench, when you have a critter like this that seriously wants a piece of you, the only recoil you notice is how much time it takes to get back on target !

No doubt about it Phil but those range sessions can be painful. That's a hammer of a bear, what's the dimensions on that beast?

Nice one, Phil!
Also nice, the camera isn't 3 feet in front of the bear's face while you are 4 feet behind the bear's ass!

I always get a kick out of those close up photos of a fluffy 3 year old cub with the hunter posing somewhere off in the distant background. Really big bears need no embellishment My hunter in this one is a huge man

I will never be without a 458 Win Mag!! Most of my present brown bear hunting ends up in jungle thick alders and deep grass, the hornady 500's work great but I've swiched to 450gr Northforks and if they get used up may go to 400's. The 458 is the most confidence inspiring rifle on my rack for close encounters!
I tend to use more than enough gun

I have a photo of my five foot "tall" wife standing behind and holding up a 77" moose rack. It looks like an Irish Elk ! And since I just posted this photo on the other 458 thread I will post it here as well I fired a 404 Jeffery with a 400 gr Swift A-frame @ 2200 fps into a stack of alternating wet/dry magazines and it penetrated 18 ". I then shot a factory 500 Hornady from my short 458 next to it and as you can see from the photo, this is where the 404 Swift stopped and the 500 gr Hornady continued on for another 6 inches !
