I'm sure most cops are "called" to be cops. Besides the calling, there is the pay check, health insurance, and retirement. In no particular order. Not to mention you don't need to get into 50k in college debt to have the career. Not any more. The trend is to go past Sgt. you need a 4 year degree. Lot's of young men and women are taking the job already $30,000 in debt with college loans. They would make more selling insurance and banking with no weekend and night work. Law Enforcement was good to me but I'm glad I steered my son and daughter away. kwg

My daughter went to college and majored in criminal justice. She graduated and studied up took and passed the civil service test, passed the fitness test and was number 2 in the interviews. She is 5' 1 maybe a little over weight, never much interest in shooting or firearms. She is very quiet and wouldn't hurt a fly. She is almost to her 5 year anniversary and she loves it, she works the swings or graves shifts so the married people can be with their families. We now go shooting all the time and I get to shoot her ar even. It scared the$hit out of her mother and I that she wanted to do this for a career because I have seen lots of officers that are jaded and disillusioned with people and life in general. I don't want her to get that way.

it was a calling to serve for me. as time goes on i see there are a lot less true victims and too many schitbird victims. the ferguson effect is strong here in the STL.
wish i was doing something else, but it's all i know
