I have a highwall that I'm going to sell. Problem is I'm not really sure of what I have. When I bought it the rifle was part of a 2 gun deal, I was told both were early Winchester highwall customs. I've never owned the Browning version and was hoping these pics would shed some light so I don't advertise something I don't have. It's chambered in a 22 Hornet and the smith used a Winchester 52 barrel. Everything done on it was done well and it shoots factory Hornet ammo without a blip. Both the top and bottom tangs have been modified so no markings or serial numbers that I can find. So....what is it? Winchester, Browning, or..... and is there any external differences between the early and later models.

Yep. The modern Japanese versions do not have the dimple where the buttstock meets receiver.

How much you want for it?

That would be a heckuva deal for someone who is contemplating building an old school Hornet. One would drop more than that into just the donor rifle.

Older soft steel 52 barrel or newer alloy steel barrel? Would make a difference in barrel life with a diet of fast jacketed ammo. (The oldtimers believed that better accuracy was to be had with the soft steel barrels + .22RF ammo, so they were offered on 52's for a while after the official switch to alloy steel barrels was made.)

If I saw that OP 22 Hornet rifle on the shelf at a gun store for $900 + tax = $988, I would buy it without a thought.

I am in the Seattle area, and I have been trying to get a Win 1885 for years.

This year I got one mail order from out of state.

I'm thinking about it, in terms of a .30-30, which would mean of course, a new barrel. I'm still thinking about it.
