A word of caution, Epsom Salts will make for some strong onions! grin

Roger, I'll send some your way, or you could go to HEB and buy the REESE brand grated horeradish. That's what I used for that cocktail sauce. It's my favorite.

Ed

after the plants grow I spray my tomatoes and peppers with epsom salt solution in a pump up sprayer.

Makes em grow!

Ed is in post-op recovery mode, and will be for some time. He finally got in to take care of a really bad wing. I hope he's doing well. I gotta' give that old boy a ring. Rog', I'll give him your digits.

This!

I used to grow 1/2 to 5 acres of tomatoes for the melon stand and a couple of specialty grocery stores. REGULAR watering schedules are essential, and proper soil PH with adequate calcium stop blossom end rot problems.

A common planting error is planting too shallow, also. When the sets get "leggy" (long stems), plant them deep until only leaves and a little stem show.

Crushed egg shells work for the calcium if you don't have the Epsom salts. Coffee grounds help too.

I believe blossom end rot can also be caused by extreme moisture fluctuations. Don't let them get real dry or drown them.
I mulch the heck out of mine to help on that issue.

Don't forget used coffee grinds around the base.
The dark color warms the soil and the acidity of the grinds deters pests.
Any fool can grow tomatoes.

I prove it every year.

IIRC, someone said they planted their tomatoes this way:

1. Dig 1' hole
2. Mix a handful of lime, handful of epsom salts, handful of fertilizer, and enough soil to fill hole half way
3. Plant tomato plant in soil in top half of hole.

Was this correct?

No.
Injun brave say number two wrong.
Dead fish.
Or at least mostly dead.
