Anyone ever had a custom gun built, and sent a factory ammo dummy round to the smith? Thinking of doing this with a 308 someday.

There is some darn good stuff on the shelf for paper punching and game taking. Why not send over a Fed Gold Match or Hornady Match 308 round, buy 500, and shoot away. Or even let the builder choose. Once you have 500 brass, reload to factory ammo specs or try a new bullet if you're bored.

How many rounds would you expect to see from a 308 before starting to chase the throat?

Many folks shoot customs with off the shelf ammo. Not a crazy idea atall.

There's already reamers that have been designed around some of the factory match ammo, Federal GMM to be sure, meaning you may not even need to send a dummy if your smith has such a reamer.

Thanks for the info Hondo. I was not aware of that.

Throating for a factory round and then trying to reload a good BC bullet like a scenar, berger, or amax will cause you difficulties in trying to reach the lands and will give you no options. This may not matter to you.
