This is actually a question on my 1985 Monte Carlo but I know some of you guys here know a lot more about cars than I do!
In the last week, the voltmeter on the dash will fluctuate from where it normally is at about 13 up to 18 and it does this on a fairly rapid cycle. At the same time both the dash lights and the headlights will get brighter. Is this some kind of short or is the alternator bad? I had a new alternator put in a couple of years ago, but this vehicle does sit a lot, maybe only driven a couple of times per month.
Thoughts?
Thanks

More likely the voltage regulator. Some are built in to the alternator and others are separate. I don't know about yours.
