Was offered this Pre War R in 250-3000 a few weeks ago and decided to accept the offer. What really intrigued me on the Savage was the condition and most of all the T7 side mount with the Weaver J 2.5
Was the side mount offered by Savage back in the day? I've seen a couple of vintage Savage ads for their scopes on 99's with what looked like this mount installed, just not real sure. What other scopes were offered in this time period?Anyway this older Savage 99 was begging me to put it back in the woods again this fall which I shall do. cool

Thanks for the information,
Steve

Nice rifle and setup.

We talked about Weaver T7 mounts a month or so ago and compared some pics and they seemed to be mounted/drilled in slightly different locations which would imply after market additions.
Did Savage offer? I doubt it, but,..

Belding & Mull was another early scope/mount manufacturer and their literature states 99's were recommended to be sent to their factory for proper mounting. Would have 2 holes in the barrel just behind the rear dovetail (an installed rear sight hides the holes) and 2 holes on either side of the cocking indicator. While some of us have guns drilled for the B&M configuration I don't think any of us has one or has actually seen a B&M setup,..yet.

You need to look at 5-24 and 5-25 in your Murray's.

The T7 could be ordered from the factory. First with a Weaver 29S and then with the 330.

Really hard to ID factory installed mounts though.

The weaver J2.5 is not period correct for the T7.

The catalogs around 1937 to 1940 offered the 99's with A T7 mount and 29S or 330 scope with no charge for mounting the scope and mount. Unfortunately I've never heard of one of them lettering. I have a 1940 vintage 99T with a T7 and a 330 scope. It didn't letter with the scope. We have to assume that the late 30's/early 40's 99's with this setup that some were factory and some weren't. At one time I had a 1942 vintage EG with this setup. It also didn't letter with the scope. It seems like the entries that JTC based his letters on during this time only showed the ship date without any other info.

That's a great looking rig. It appears to be in really clean condition. I hope to see some pictures of it next to a big buck this November.

I believe that the ledgers from late '37 and onwards were lost, the only information available is a date from the shipping receipt/whatever. No model info, no cartridge info, no special order info available.

Sweet! Something that I intend to duplicate some day given that I've got a receiver D&Ted for the T-7 but you've got an original. Maybe not factory but maybe it is. Hard to tell given the remaining factory records from that era. A simply splendid rifle.

Thanks guys for the nice comments. Very much appreciated.
I would like to find a period correct scope for this. From what I'm being told it's either a Weaver 29S or a Weaver 300.
Anyone have a nice condition of either they would be willing to sell?

Many thanks
Steve

There has been a number of 29S scopes on ebay recently. You can have one of those for under a 100 bucks. 330s will push 300 sometimes.

I have seen those on EBay. Would rather spend my money with people that I can trust.
Appreciate the info.

I don't know anything about the 330s or 29S scopes, but the J2.4 or J4 scopes have good optics and were designed for center fire rifles . . . and are probably an optical upgrade to their older brethren.

You have a better scope with the J2.5 compared with the 29S given equal clarity. I have both. Can't speak to the 330.

Sometimes, as with eBay, you've got to take a leap of faith. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. On the other hand, as several other folks have stated, you've already got better optics. If you really want a correct scope for the era I'd buy the cheapest one I could find regardless of it's optics and use it for display only. Heading into the deer woods I'd put the J2.5 back on. I really have to take exception with the comparison of optics from the old Weaver models to the J and K series that came later. I have seen a lot more lens separation problems in the post 1947 scopes than I ever have in the 29S, 330 or 440 scopes. Many of the old scopes have crosshair and adjustment problems but if the lenses have not been scratched or chipped they work pretty dam well.
