Yeah..but 9mm V .45 cal is another debate entirely!

I am suprised nobdy has released a modern, reasonable carbine that works on say Glock magazines..I am sure it would sell well in the US..

they have, you can convert a glock to a carbine

Kel-Tec Sub2000 carbines take Glock mags in 9x19 or .40S&W.

yet.

there is an article in the current NRA mag about james river making a replica of the rock-ola m1carbine, using military parts and new made barrels and recievers, for about 1300bucks.
problem is from the picture they are using as a finish one of the repark colors, not original. And the writer had some things wrong, stating the most popular were winchester and irwin pederson, and rock-ola. Most people have never even seen a irwin pederson.

I had a Camp 45. Only complaint I had was that it ejected the brass a good 40 feet away!

AR15 in 300 AAC Blk would be the ultimate weapon for that crowd of Monkeys.

I had a .45 Camp Carbine. It split the wood stock, so I ordered another from Marlin, and it split that one, too. In addition to that, mine wouldn't function well with my many assorted 1911 magazines, to include Wilsons and Shooting Stars, and wouldn't release the magazines, either, you had to really pull on the magazines to get them out.

The magazine safety pizzed me off, too. It didn't feed 200gr. SWCs, which almost all my ammo was loaded with, and overall, I ended up despising the hunkajunk.

I know of three people who had the 9mms, and they didn't exhibit the same issues I had, in fact, they shot well and functioned well. Dunno why the .45s I had was so bad, but I sure don't want to look for another one. It was a POS.

Sounds like the buffer was not there or not working, which seems to be the most common issue with the design. The factory buffers can get brittle and go to pieces. Blackjack (IIRC) makes a good replacement that holds up better.

For the weight and size though, I'd pick something else for home defense.

The Marlins look fairly light and handy? Certainly a lot lighter than a typical 12 gauge semi auto?

Folding stock M1 Carbine would work also, even if "only" .30cal..

Yep, I would much rather have the M1. My next must have item. Besides, the Marlin felt like I was like holding a 4x4 post.

Most ditched them for the M4's because the M4's had so much more to offer. And the 5.56 actually has LESS barrier penetration than the pistol cartridge rifles, and many LE agencies saw penetration as a potential liability. This is also why many SWAT teams have moved from the MP5 to the M4.

But the M4 is easier to shoot, flatter shooting, has better human engineering, easier to train on...pretty much every category but "warm and fuzzy". The wood stock I guess makes some more warm and fuzzy, but Americans seem to be getting over that.

A 300 BO loaded up with supersonic 110 VMax might make a formidable HD weapon. Modest recoil, good firepower, less muzzle blast than the 5.56.

Hi-Point and Grendel make some pistol-caliber carbines as well. I have no experience with them.

I looked hard at a variety of pistol caliber carbines, conversions, AR builds, etc, etc. and finally wound up with a Daniel Defense .300 Blackout. 125gr Ballistic Tips work pretty well at 2200 fps. Same mags as the other AR's. More shots than any shotgun, shorter, handier OAL, too.

The Keltec shotgun could be real interesting with 14 shots on board and a very short OAL, but even after the price drops I'm not sure I'm willing to risk $800 on one of them. They supposedly kick like hell too, and considerable practice is indicated with something so unusual.

There's lots of carbines out there that seem like they'd be cool for HD - Model 94's, Thompsons, FAL pistols grin, bullpups of one sort or another, but as a practical matter, after much study, it's tough to beat an M4 of one sort or another. smile

I watched a documentary on the French Foreign Legion the other night and apparently when the were fighting in Indo-China pot WW2, they were very enamoured with the M1 Carbine.

The then showed a couple of shots into a block of ballistic gelatine, and compared it to a 30-06 round from a Garand, and the wound channel from the little .30cal was very impressive indeed. With a SP as suggested about, I can see it being even more effective again..
