Looking to develop a load with these bullets in my boat paddle model 77. I have H4895, Varget, CFE 223, Accurate 2015, and Benchmark on hand. Does anyone have any experience with these bullets with these powders?

Barnes recommends at least a 1-9 twist for their 62gr bullets. I think the older boat paddle M77s were all 1-12. I doubt they will stabilize in that twist. The new Hawkeye models are 1-9 twist. You may have to step down to the 50-53gr bullets, possibly 55gr, to shoot in a 1-12.

Good point TATELAW. I'd not thought about the twist of the barrel in the OP's query.

I'd not mind eventually trying the 62 TTSX in a 1:8, but I don't think they are going to be necessary, given my purposes. I've not seen a 1:14 that will shoot 53 TSX accurately-- tried in at least 3 guns: a 22-250, a 223, and a 221 FB. Maybe a 1:12 would do it. The 50 TTSX looks interesting for a slow-twist.

I plan on hunting deer/antelope with the 1:8 223. Here at the fire, I keep hearing that the various 55gr PSP do as well for meat deer as the various Barnes. And I hear good things about the 50 V-max too. I know the 55 V-max will punch through silhouette iron at 100 when started at 3500 in a 1:14. Seems "adequate" for critters through the ribs.

Chesterwy, what is your purpose with said 62gr TTSX in your 77?

I know there are guys shooting this bullet and others like it around here somewhere...

I have both the 53gr TSX and the 50gr TTSX in my reloading room. Both say minimum twist is 1-12. I think the 45 and 50gr TSX FB are the only ones that Barnes recommends for a 1-14. However, I do hear a lot of people on here getting the others to stabilize in slower twists. Maybe higher altitudes? I'm fairly close to sea level down here in MS.

I'm about to start load workup on the 62gr TSX as well, for my 1:8 AR15. I have most of the same powders as the OP, but will start with CFE223, and maybe try X-Terminator as well.

I really like CFE223. A lot. I'd like to get my hands on a few more lbs. Was able to get 2 lbs in the mad scramble right after it hit shelves, but that is the last I've seen of it in retail. It is tops for me in velocity/accuracy balance in a heavy target 223.

Thanks for the insight. Hadn't thought about the rate of twist on my rifle when I bought the bullets. I was wanting to develop a load for them since we have to use at least a 60 grain bullet for 22 centerfires for big game here in WY. I was hoping to be able to use these on a couple doe antelope. I already have a very accurate load for this rifle using 55 grain game kings with varget.

Take a look at the Nosler 64 BSB. They are a shorter bullet and lots of folks are having good luck with them in even 1-14 twist rifles. That 60 grain rule kinda sucks.

And there's always the Nosler Partition. It should also shoot in a 1:12. It should, but I couldn't get it to. I am sure the 64gr solid-base bonded will stabilize in a 1:12.

I struggle to understand why manufacturers don't standardize a quick, 1-8" or 1-9", ROT in all of their .224" bore rifles. The Ruger makes the RAR-Predator in 223 with a 1-8" ROT and the 22-250 with a 1-10" ROT, why not make both 1-8" ROT? Since I'm mostly shooting 60 grain VMax and Partitions in my .224" bore rifles, the slower ROT isn't a serious problem.

Ive shot a ton of 53 gr. Barnes in 1 in 14 twist with no problem and Im getting excellent results out of the 55 gr TTSX in a 1 in 12...50 TTSX shoot in anything. I have no experience with the 62s but my guess is a 1 in 9 will handle them if the OP has a new Hawkeye.

I couldn't ever get the Partition to shoot in anything. I finally traded off the ones I had left. Another option in a 1-12 would be the 63gr Sierra since it is a flat base. Not sure but the 65 Sierra might also work. That boat tail does make it a little longer but you could give it a try.

I shoot the 62 TTSX in front of a max charge of Varget. 2 different Savage 223s shoot that load very well, but they are both a 9 twist.

I like that Sierra 63. Had some amazing accuracy from it when I was playing with a WSSM. I had planned to hunt deer with that combo. I'm sure the bullet is up for it. I shot clean holes through 1/4" steel plate with it. Crappy BC though. I shouldn't care.

I finally got MOA from the Partitions in a 1:8 twist 223. I'll hunt with them at some point. Sure would love to own some land in hog country!
