Always had Labs as we've had good luck with them as a house dog/pet and multi purpose hunter. I've heard the same about Vizlas. Has anyone here had both, differences?

Owned both. Both, based on my experiences, have very good temperaments.


I enjoy upland preferred vizsla over a pointing lab.Did some wTerfowl with vizsla in early fall but obviously a lab would be much better for waterfowl . Vizslas can be a bit clingy but I really like the breed.

What do you plan to hunt? Indoor dog? Take the dog everywhere with you?

Doves, valley quail, preserve chukars & pheasants, no waterfowl anymore. It will get to spend plenty of time indoors and we usually take the dog with us when we travel. The only Vizsla I've seen hunt seemed to have considerably better upland stamina especially in warmer weather then the Labs I've owned and my Labs were in good shape.

How difficult are Vizslas to train? One thing I like about Labs is that most people with a little training knowledge can have a pretty good all around hunting dog if the dogs got reasonably decent hunting bloodlines.

My Vizsla's ( male) kind of hard headed but were eager to please. I did notice that they are very sensitive to any type of strong corrections.

I have owned and trained two labs and have hunted with a friends Vizsla a few dozen times. It is really not fair to compare the two breeds in my opinion. The Vizsla is a great upland dog but cannot handle difficult waterfowl duties. A good lab is hard to beat as an all purpose gun dog ,but a good Vizsla will be the superior upland dog. It all depends on your needs.Good luck.

Same here! Our Visla was the smartest dog we ever owned. If I knew then what I know now, that would have been such a blast. Visla's are great people/family dogs.

That does not take away anything from Lab's; they are great people dogs as well. My lab can be a bit "bone headed" at times.

I would have loved to try my Visla over water, she loved to swim more than any dog I've been around.
