I just got an order from Midway yesterday and instead of the the .44 cal 270 grain Gold Dots I ordered they were 270 grain Deep Curls. My question to you guys is are these the same bullets just with a different label or did Speer change the bullets?

I just checked Speer's website and it looks like they don't make the 270 grain Gold Dot anymore, only make the Deep Curls in the 270 grain - http://www.speer-bullets.com/ballis...28&usage=1&brand=0&firearm=2

Are you using them in a 444 Marlin? If so, I'd like to know how they compare with the Gold Dot if you get a chance to shoot some into wet phone books or wet newspaper...

I'd sent them an e-mail question via their webpage earlier today, hopefully I get a response next week. I'm running them out of a .44 Marlin and a 6" 629 over 21 grains of H110. I've yet to recover one from either gun that showed any expansion. Eyeballing them and scratching the lead tips I see no difference. Not that that means anything. I'll probably load a few up this weekend and shoot somehting to see if I can get it to expand. If so I'll post it.

Are you saying the 270 Gold Dot does not expand out of the carbine with a full dose of H110??

That's interesting. I don't have a library of kills with the bullet but I've shot 3 deer with it in Speer factory loads out of a Ruger Deerfield. One 150 lb buck showed evidence of expansion on a shot broadside across the top of the heart from 50 yds but of course the bullet didn't stay in. A doe at 80 or so was hit at the base of the neck and the bullet zinged on thru as well. But a 135 lb buck I shot at fairly close range from an elevated stand held the bullet. It went thru his right shoulder blade, under the spine, diagonally down thru the chest and stopped under the belly skin just behind the rib cage on the left side. Nice mushroom with no jacket separation, as you would expect. Only thing I've shot with them out of a pistol was a small hog in the head. Can't say about the bullet, but his head expanded a bit.

I've not recovered one from game, but the ones I have recovered from chunks of wood, snowbanks, and dirt showed only rifling marks. I've not had any other flatpoint not expand after hitting any of those mediums. I tried to catch one after passing through jugs of water, but even out of my revolver 7 jugs didn't hold it and the exit hole on the last was caliber sized.

Just my experience, take it for what it's worth. I'm a little bored this weekend so I'm going fill a bunch of jugs and see if I can't catch one.

Good thing these aren't hollow points then I guess. wink
FWIW I've recovered quite a few hollowpoints out of snowbanks that opened quite well.

I have shot alot of the old 300 grain Speer Unicores in my 454 Casull but they say now the new ones are Gold Dots that need velocity to work right..Haven't tried them but I strongly suggest the Hornady XTP..I used them in my 454 before they had the XTP Mag and there a super bullet that holds together very well at extreme velocities and open at low end also.

Well I didn't have as much time this weekend as I hoped to, but it's a moot point as Speer sent me an e-mail yesterday evening stating the bullet is the same, only the label has changed.

Very interesting, and thanks for the pics. First ones I've seen of that bullet expanded.
