I'll be handloading the .270 WSM for Whitetails. Which weight bullet do you suggest 130 or 140 ??? Thanks.

Depends, are you a shoulder shooter or lunger? Does meat damage bother you?

Either weight would be fine but may I suggest that you stick with a well constructed premium bullet because of the high velocity that the 270 wsm generates. The nosler partition or barnes ttsx would be a good choice.

I load the 140's since the velocity isn't that much different. In many cases, the best powders for the 140's will bring greater numbers than the 130's. Of course, velocity isn't the main thing, but if I am loading a magnum cartridge, why not shoot it to it's full potential?

RL 19 is a screaming powder for the 130's, but it had some sensitivity issues and lot to lot differences a while back, so I gave up on it. I reccomend Magpro with the 140 Accubond or TSX. You can get 3200+ fps and great accuracy.

The 150grn Fusion factroy ammo is tough to beat if you don't want to handload.

My sako likes a max charge of IMR 4350 and 130 grain accubond or BT. This load only runs about 3220 fps.

I have found both RL19,RL22 and RL25 did not give me the accuracy or any more velocity.

I will be trying RL17 soon..

MM,

Here's a couple of loads I like. Mine shoots both of these very well. It's a Model 70 and it seems to shoot the heavier bullets better.

7MM WSM - Load 1

Primer: Remington 9-1/2 LRM
Powder: H 1000 - 72.0 Gr. **MAX.**
Bullet: Nosler 140 Gr. Ballistic Tip
OAL: 2.880"
Case Usage: Winchester ?
Remarks: Hodgdon internet data says max. 3,091 FPS from 24" barrel.
1" group 3 shots. Don't think this bullet would be good for hunting though.
Too fragile at this high velocity. 150 gr. load shot better.

7MM WSM - Load 2

Primer: Remington 9-1/2 LRM
Powder: Winchester 780 Supreme - 70.0 Gr. (0.6 Gr. Below Max.)
Bullet: Nosler 150 Gr. Ballistic Tip
OAL: 2.860"
Case Usage: Remington ?
Remarks: Hodgdon internet data says 70.6 gr. max. 3,197 FPS from 24" barrel.
Should be at least 3,100 FPS.

Start low and work up!

FWIW-
My handloads for the 270 WSM and 130 gr. Nosler Partitions leave the barrel at 3240 fps, and are sub-moa accurate.

However- 140 gr. factory ammo, the Federal Vital-Shok with Accubond bullets, leaves the barrel at 3269 fps, and is equally accurate. Not to mention carrying more energy, and flatter, downrange. And with no apparent pressure issues, hard extraction, etc.

As far as I am concerned, if your rifle will shoot them accurately, 140 gr. bullets are THE preferred projectile in 270 WSM.

There will be little difference between them, and bullet construction would matter a whole lot more than 10 gr of weight.

The 280 Remington is overbore.

I had a 270 WSM in a T3 and it was one of the easiest rifle to load for I ever had. I started with 130 grain Sierra GK's and 130 Barnes TSX's and Magpro. Both bullets shot very well with a max charge of Magpro at 3300 fps each. I believe I added a half grain or a grain to the TSX above book max.

140 grain Accubond has worked on everything from antelope to elk for me. I shot 130 grn. Ballistic Tips, 130 grn Partitions, 130 grn Interbonds and 130 grn SST's. I settled on the 140 grn Accubond and won't be changing anytime soon. Unbelievably accurate and kills stuff where they stand.

I've used 130 gr Nosler Ballistic Tips in 270 WSM Federal factory rounds at 3300 fps. They did an oustanding job ; 1130 and 2225 yds. 3 dead deer on the spot.

I've also used 140 gr Hornady Interlock BTSP I handloaded to 3150 fps. Worked well at 130 and 240 yds.

Neither bullet cost a fortune to handload and will work fine at the velocitis of a 270 WSM. I think I give a slight edge to the ballistic tip for whitetails because all three deer were bang flops.

I also have 110gr Barnes loaded up to 3600fps that I would like to tryout some day. Very accurate on paper (but I hate to spend that much for bullets).

65.8 grains of RL-17 and I'm at 3575 fps (yes I rounded up to 3600). No signs of exessive pressure in my rifle. I'm sure I could reach the actual 3600fps safely but I don't want to spend the money for more TTSX's.

I figure 66gr. is max in my rifle. I went to 67grs and had good accuracy but erratic velocity (3800-4000fps!) I'm happy where I'm at now....

I've had 2 complete pass throughs on GA whitetails both shots under 30 yrds, MV = 3,265 fps. Using 130gr Hornady Interlokts.

Not the fastest load but shoots bug holes.
