I recently bought a 28" VR 1300 barrel for my Dad's 1200. It included a single I/C Win-Choke tube. I am interested in a full set of choke tubes, where do I start my search (brand, sellers etc.)

Thanks!

I am lost, is there a choke tube for dummies faq?

I am open to either with good quality and reasonable cost high on the list and I don't mind used parts either.

My interests would be all game birds with the focus Quail, Dove and Pheasant.

If it makes a difference the barrel is a 2 3/4"-3"

well if you are just trying to cover shooting game birds that IC will work well. You really don't need a full set of chokes unless you just want to spend money.

There is nothing wrong with factory chokes. Many well say different but I disagree. There are a bunch of aftermarket chokes out there. From flush to extended, Ported to non-ported.

When I started shotgun sports and hunting after a decade or so of lagging. One of the guys I worked with was (still is) very well versed in shotguns, he is an excellent Trap shooter. He recommended Briley Light Modified. Based on a book by Bobby Brister, Shotgunning the Art and the Science as well as his experience. I have the Light Modified in some shotguns that has not been changed since.

So that is what I use, for Trap and for most hunting (Pheasant, Dove, Duck and Goose), Briley Light Modified from www.briley.com the extended versions are nice because you can always tighten them in the field without a wrench.

The 1200 is a nice shotgun. I just cleaned up a 28", full choke barrel with vent rib that I found (don't think it had ever been cleaned!). Really solid bolt lock up design.

LMod is a very fine choke and what I shoot sporting clays with. I also like it for grouse and woodcock. But I wouldn't go buy a LMod when I already have an IC for upland hunting. There just isn't enough difference.

Cabelas sells a lot of brands or you can go direct to Briley, Trulock, Carlson, etc.

+1 on the IC. You might already have all you need for the hunting you describe. Shots at wild birds often/usually vary in distance and an IC or Lt Modified are good all purpose chokes. I'd pattern it with the shells I would be using, if you've got the time and patience, to get an idea of how it shoots what.

Thanks for the input, my plan is to give the I/C a chance and keep my eye out for a couple of Win-chokes for cheap. Briley is proud of their tubes!

Keep your eye open for Carlson's choketubes - wide variety available at a reasonable price, I've used them and they pattern/perform well - a complete set of Briley tubes will cost more than a basic M1200 is worth! I have used Carlson's with complete satisfaction in Winchester, Benelli, and Browning shotguns. http://www.choketube.com/

I picked up some Winchoke tubes from Midway and Midwest Gun Works last year for a 16 gauge 1200. They had lots of choices for 12 gauge. Of course, i had no choice but to go with factory Winchester/Browning chokes, you have all kinds of aftermarket choices in 12 gauge. You will find Winchokes on Ebay occassionally.

One choice you may not be aware of is Wright's. They are well know for repair/rebuilding of Winchester Model 12s and SX1s. I had a look at some of their tubes recently and was impressed. I may be switching to them from Briley Spectrums.

Definitely agree that Light Modified / Winchester Skeet 2 is one of the most useful and overlooked chokes.

Go to gunbroker, shotgun parts, chokes, and type in "winchoke" and I think you will find what you are looking for.
