I have a Weatherby Vanguard S2 stainless in .257 Weatherby mag and plan to mount a Leupold FX-3 6x42 on it. Need to purchase bases and rings. Thinking Leupolds or Tallys. Not sure as to lows, mediums, etc. Your thoughts, opinions, recommendations would be appreciated, the more specific the better.

I have medium rings on my M70 with a 6x42mm. The scope would clear the barrel with low rings but when I shoulder the rifle I don't have to scruntch down on the comb like I did with low rings. Several guys here at the campfire like medium rings for natural fit to the rifle and scope for eye alignment.

IIRC, Weatherby sells rings and bases for the Vanguard that are made by Talley.

The difference between medium and high rings is only about 0.13". Differences in frame size, scull anatomy and shooting position can be at least that much. I recommend that you try both sizes and then decide. The extra cost to buy both med and high rings is minimal. Trying both will give you confidence that you found the best possible fit.
