How do I get very low mount on 1949 Win. Model 70 short action?

It has the old style drop stock and I want to get a scope with a small objective down low so I can get the best cheek weld possible

The lowest setup I know of would be Warne or Leupold QRW bases and the original style low Weaver rings. They will get the scope down far enough that bolt handle clearance is minimal but adequate.

Here's as low as you can go: Weaver bases and Weaver clam-shell rings holding a Weaver K3 scope. The rifle is a 1947 Transition model 30-06 in a factory low-comb stock. Those Weaver rings are available quite cheaply and are rugged as heck:

Here's pretty low as well: same rifle but wearing a McMillan factory low-comb replacement stock, Burris Zee low rings holding a Leupold M8 3x:

There is no such thing as a pre-64 Model 70 "short action." All chamberings were on the same action (even the diminutive 22 Hornet) with the differences being in the magazine box and follower. Scope mounting length and height are the same for all chamberings.

O...45 is correct. I have a vintage Lyman All American 4X on my pre war right now. You need a bit of scope length to span the bridge. A non AO 3./5-10 Leupold will work, rings may need to be medium. Also, Leupold has the 3X back at SWFA. Works great! Jack
