Other than a couple of inexpensive Tasco scopes that were mistakes for my 10-22's, I have always used Leupold VX1-vx111 on my hunting rifles. I used to shoot competition running deer and have a good ability to find my target in a 9X setting, and use the 3-4x for early-late light conditions only.
Now I need a combo scope for both squirrels ( 16x or so max) with a 4x or so minimum range for deer/ coyote hunting, and it's time to venture away from Leupold. I see Mueller has some with side focus, but fail to find much feedback on their product.
Thanks for any suggestions, or other scopes in the sub $300 range that would fill my needs.

The guys over on Rimfirecentral love the Mueller scopes. I haven't heard from anyone putting one on a centerfire rifle. I have a Burris FFII in 4.5-14x42 and it has been a good scope. I think that the Pentax version can be found for around 250.00

amax is right. I also have a FFIIon my 30-06 and a Pentax on my .270. The Pentax is extremely clear and bright at low light. I only paid $140.00 for it. It's a 3 X 9, but it seems as good as my FFII at full power. I called Mueller when I was looking for a scope because I was concerned about the shock from my 30-06. I had a Leupold VX III and I couldn't trust it to hold zero. Mueller did not seem to want to give me any assurances that their scopes would be as shockproof as I was hoping. I think they are made in Michigan. Anyway, I couldn't find any at a reasonable price, so I started asking around on this forum and another in Pennsylvania and I ended up with the FFII and the Pentax Gameseeker. I like the BDC reticle on the FFII. Also I like the fact that Burris will go over your scope and be sure it is shockproof before you spend a lot of buck's on a Hunting trip and find out that your scope won't hold a zero. Outside of that most guy's I suspect will tell you to go Leupold, but I feel they are overpriced and you can do just fine with a Burris or a Pentax. Good luck.

i had one of their Eradicators (8.5-25x50) on my savage model 12 in .223 for a while. it went with tthat rifle when i traded guns with a guy and it held zero just fine. tracking was surprisenly good, eye releif was a tad critical but clarity and contrast were acceptable even on the higher magnification. it even saw a tour on top of my 30-06 for a while. i know the apv model is more of a rimfire rated up to a light centerfire (.223 or the likes) but they have a couple models that they did rate for centerfire back when i had this (about 4 years ago)

I know there are a couple of guys over at accuratereloading.com in the varmint forum that like them. I can't say as I've heard of any problems with them yet. Was thinking about maybe getting one for one of my trip deuces.

Have a tac 2 on my 7mag holds zero and tracks well. I think these are great scopes better than the vx 2 it replaced.

I've got a APV on my 243 for a long range coyote gun. When I'm hunting tighter cover I switch to a Bushnell 4200 1.5x4x24mm. The APV is a great scope, very clear edge to edge and tracks great. If others are getting the performance out of there APV's that I am it is the best deal out there.
