I have a chance to buy a new Leupold green ring spotting scope "sequoia" 15-45 on clearance for $159. My question is...how good of scope is this and how good of deal is this in terms of quality for the money??? Thanks for any input.

IMO, and it's just my opinion, but that particular spotter is a total piece of crap. Sorry to be so blunt but I wouldn't want one if they gave it to me.

It is irrelevant what you think. What matters is the TRUTH.

If you're just going to just use it for gun range work, then it probably would be fine.

If you're going to hunt with it, it would be a total waste of $159.

Didn't Leupold discontinue the "Sequoia" series? Five years ago I picked up a 20-60x 80mm Sequoia that was on sale from Sinclair Intl. Got it on a tripod in our sun room where you can see for 1.3 miles. Just use it for checking out wildlife and stuff. It was made in Korea, (didn't know that when I bought it). I bought it cause it was a Leupold, it was on sale, and I wanted something to replace the 18-36x 50mm Tasco that I bought from Natchez Shooters Supply about six months earlier. The Leupold's pretty good but I don't feel it's up to their usual quality level. I wasn't expecting it to be like my buddies gold ring spotter but it cost a lot less so I guess I got what I paid for. If I can ever afford it; someday I wanna get a Swarovski.

I agree with JG, I had one, and it was very disappointing.
I bought it from SWFA, and they were nice enough to take it
back in on trade.
I would save up and get something better.

Where? I plan on using a spotting scope mainly for range work out to 2-300 yards.

Are you sure about that, and have you tried them both ?

A dealer I talked to said the Ventana, is much the same
scope, as the Sequoia. I have not tried it, but I would
go slow here, and try it out, or get a nice return policy.

Have you tried these scopes, or is this an armchair review?

It makes a difference, also do you have any good scopes that you have compared them with?

I have been using a Leupold Wind River 15-45 60mm LER spotter for quite a while. I find it excellent and it stays in the car for all around use.

I like its variable power and I zoom in to find a shot when required.

For that price its not a problem to me. On the other hand the eyesight of individuals varies. Look thru it to see if your eye likes it.

I agree with the rest of the posters. If you want a good spotting scope its going to cost a few dollars. The best all around scope I have ever looked through is the 12-40x60 Leupold. If you wear eyeglasses its the best one I have seen. If you don't its still my first choice.
