Thinking of getting into casting my own shot. anyone doing this? what are you using? how difficult is it? Thanks

I know a guy who shoots competitively who casts his own shot, but he uses linotype almost exclusively as he acquired 20,000 lbs..

Your probably not going to have that option...

He said WW metal sucks (I think it would be the best, almost perfect). I got his bad wheelweight metal and sure enough all of it was contaminated with both zinc AND calcium (batteries). He did not prepare the alloy right, nor did he have any quality control.

My recommendation still is to use wheelweights, but melt the alloy separately (not using the shot maker) to 685 add a little tin, flux and skim, then pour into ingots. This prevents a zinc contamination. Keeping battery alloy is simply not using any ingots from someone else and just not using batteries!

The shot makers are prone to plug, do not drop nice pellets if you do not have a clean, good filling alloy.
