I have always loved these animals and hopefully will get a chance to hunt them sometime in the near future. I am looking for a place to hunt that is going to provide me with the largest cat (preferably a 180 pounder), with the greatest success rate in killing one. I know that is probably what everyone is looking for, but where should I go? Do I have to hunt in the snow to have a chance at a cat like this? Any tips you could provide would be helpful. Thanks.

A 180 pounder is an enormous cat. I have chased those things all over in Idaho and Montana in both the desert and mountains. I have seen 1 or 2 that sorta, maybe, possibly would go that big. If a 180 pounder is your goal I would suggest looking into Canada.

They have taken some 180+ cats but I think a more realistic goal is 150+. They take some very nice cats every year. They use several people each day to look for tracks and hunt in two guide areas to increase the odds of finding a large cat. It's expensive, but your chances of taking a really nice cat are very good with them.

What are your chances of taking a lynx while on the lion hunt?

Really the chances on lynx are pretty low. They are in the higher country in deeper snow. The dogs have a hard time running them unless the conditions are just right. Usually the conditions are just right before the season opens. Bobcat are pretty easy to add though, and the bobcat there are huge with long hair.

What do you consider huge for a bobcat?

And the faint smell of poop wafted through the air as the hunter traded gun for camera. Is that a ski area in the background?
That is too large of a kitten to just be hanging out.

NM has plenty. If your going for Ibex, hit the southern sacs for James Bond's Pussy Galore. Our kitties are not as big Scenar's, but most of what Scenar deals with isn't small

Also, do you need to be a Navy Seal to survive a lion hunt in the snow?

If you email Stephen at ram Creek he will tell you what they usually weigh. I would just be guessing. I just know that the ones I've seen were bigger than what I was used to seeing and the hair was something else.

You do want to be in reasonable shape for his hunt. Sometimes you get lucky and the dogs tree right off the road, and other times it is a several hour climb to the top of the mountain. Nothing like goat hunting but it can be pretty exhausting.

This is the other area you will hunt besides Stephens. It is owned by his brother. You have to drive through it to get to Stephens. Baldy Mountain

The cat in the tree we let walk...this is a 145 pound male that I killed in 1985. The skull went 14" even.

It's not a ski hill in the background, its Emigrant Peak in the upper Yellowstone...but what do I know? I'm just a flatlander...
