I'm new here so Hi. Been reading for a while and decided to join.

I am planning a trip to Africa this coming Sept and was wondering if i can use my .30-06 for hunting the following animals:

1. Gemsbok
2. Blue Wildabeast
3. Impala
4. Blesbok
5. Warthog

I'm sure I can hunt the Warthog and the Blesbok but am not sure of the rest. I will contact my guide and figure it out from there but I'm sure you guys can help.

You most certainly can use your 30-06 just choose a good bullet and practice. You will be set

I assure you it will work quite well. I took mine to S.A. last year and shot Red Hartebeest, 2 Blue Wildebeest, Gemsbok, Impala, Eland and Zebra. No problems at all. None needed more than one but I did put a finisher in the Wildebeest.

Welcome to the fire Hanzo.

Your 30-06 will be more than good for all the animals you want to hunt. It is one of the best calibers available for hunting our way.

Thanks!

I am really looking forward to it. I just took delivery of my new rifle and am stoked to use it, I like this caliber because I generally only hunt in N.A but I am going to spoil myself a bit this year with the Africa trip.

I guess if I chose something a bit bigger I will "borrow" my PH' gun.

Look down this list to the 300wsm thread. Read the last page. I've used a 30/06 as a loaner rifle for hundreds of animals including eland and giraffe for dozens of my hunters.

It's a nearly perfect plains game choice. Use the 165 grain TSX bullets. Do not use federal fusion bullets.

Hanzo111,
Spend the time on the range to familiarize yourself with your new rifle. That 30.06 is more than just adequate and is one of the most popular calibres, if not the most popular under the locals.
It will get the job donw with some effort to spare, but most of all have blast and don't forget to come and share your story wtih photos when you get back.

Take Care,

Best Regards.

It will work just fine, given good shot placement and an adequate bullet. I have killed a lot of plains game with an '06 loaded with 180 grain Federal Barnes TSX ammunition.

Funny context,
By comparison the 30/06 today exceeds the original loads from a 300 HH.

Great choice. Be sure to practice shooting over shooting sticks as they use them a lot in Africa. Can take a few minutes to get used to if you are not familiar with them, so do it here first. JMHO TM

I have to find some nice sticks.

I'm going to the NRA range tonight in VA to fire the rifle for the first time. The riffle has sights and my scope is mounted on Talley quick release mounts.

As for the scope choice, I have the following:

1. Nikon Monarch 1-4x24
2. Swarovski 3.5-18x44mm Z5 (Currently Mounted)

Any advice regarding which scope would be better?

I had good luck with 30-06 and 168 grain ttsx. Killed each animal you listed plus kudu. All one shot kills.

Caveat. Make sure you have a good bullet
