Sue wants to rent a car to drive on vacation. Does anyone know of a mid-size car that gets 35 miles per gallon at highway speed?

We rented a Chevy Cobalt that did that, or a little better, on the roads in northern Arizona, and southern Utah. It was "big enough" for two and all the luggage, but I'd have preferred a bigger car. Still, the mileage was pretty darned good, even if the car lacked a lot.

The new chevys are boasting great mileage with a good amount of room to go with it.... Some of the camrys are getting 30 plus..... Twere' me I would gladly sacrifice a few mpg for a bigger car with more room.....

I've got a 2001 VW Passat station wagon with the turbo 4 cylinder engine. If I set cruise control at 65 mph on the highway, I can easily get 35 mpg; in moderate weather months 36-37 (with A/C off).

Depends what you mean by "mid-sized", I spent my formative years in England so the scale of what folks need here in the US still floors me.
Anyhow, our recent model year Toyota Corolla gets about that and it seems like a "mid-size" car to me. Anything comparable will get about that.
One factor to consider is if you'll be running the A/C or not, that can knock off 5 mph.
My wife and I do long road trips most every year and I fully agree, when you are covering miles by the thousand, fuel costs can add up big time.

My Mom's Camry gets 32 hwy and it's got a lot of room. The Corolla is a good bit smaller and only boasts 35. I think all the little Hyundai cars on tv are advertizing mileage in the 40's. My friend's wife traded in her corolla for a hyundai and likes it so far.

Buick LaCrosse. I would sacrifice a couple of miles per gallon for the comfort of this car.

We used to have a Nissan Altima with the V6 that got 32mph driving from Colorado to eastern Nebraska. Mixed driving, it got around 26.

VW TDI - mine 2006 Jetta with the auto. 36-38 knocking around town or pulling my little custom Gheenoe and 42-46 on the "I" depending on quality of diesel, if I load it down with full trunk and if I set the cruise on 70 or 80. Even loaded and puling the boat I've never gotten less than 36.
Trade off is the currently higher price of diesel over reg in my area which is about 10-15% but the mileage difference from my old car, 2006 Subaru Legacy GT with manual 5-speed at 22-24 mpg nad having to run premium, more than makes up for it.
Once the early season run of heating oil/fuel ends and diesel gets back to where it is the same or less than premium I've even happier.
