Going to add one to the stable, new at harbor freight 7k lbs can be had for $45 and some tax, otd for $50 or so. A used one can be had on craigslist for $40.
Do they wear out, other concerns with used that I should know about? Thanks again for all the advice Jon

If you wear one out you are da man! Had one for 30 years, keep it oiled and don't worry about it.

I broke mine, but I'm special.
Wife got me a new hi-lift last x-mas. I try to not break it.
Something clever here.

Springs get weak, pins rust and stick. Keep a can of wd40 or something similar around. A new one will work like an old one after riding in the truck box for a year.

If you get a used one, buy a pin kit. Well worth 15-20 bucks.

Hi-Lift jacks are the best. Get one and enjoy it. I suspect(not confirmed) the one from Harbor Freight will be made in China. Like other HF articles originating in China, I figure them for inferior. And now for another bit of advice. If in a real jam with no lubricant to be had, whiz on the mechanical parts and it will work. One more word of advice, keep your chin away from the handle radius.

Go with a Hi-lift brand.
Judging by most of the crap Harbor Freight carries, the one they carry is likely a cheaper brand. I saw a knock-off brand bend under a fairly light load. Huge POS.

Hi-lift used to be American made. Not sure now though, but I would buy a used and get a pin kit for that reason.

Changed my search over to Hi lift jacks, found a few, one for $40 about 15 miles away. Hope to meet up tomorrow and get a little practice in with it.

I wouldn't trust one from Harbor Freight. Do yourself a favor and get a Hi-Lift. Someday you'll be glad you did.

Hi-lift used to be American made. Not sure now though, but I would buy a used and get a pin kit for that reason. Correct, just about every vehicle in my area has one and the Hi-lift is the most reliable, with the 60" bar being the pick...the orange welded ones are dangerous as they let go at the most inopportune moments. I currently have an early Hi-lift with the rounded top jaw that I have to strip with a soda blaster, repaint, and put a pin kit through...I am currently using it for lifting star posts out when fencing.
These are my opinions, feel free to disagree.

Buy quality not Harbor Freight, Don't buy used, they may be hard to break but it can be done, they can also get slightly bent and not work with a damn, new kit or not.

Always keep a can of WD40 in the truck. Sooner or later the pins on a Hi-Lift will stick. A good squirt will have you going in seconds.

Get the little rubber deals that hold the handle away from the jack if you are going to be carrying it in the vehicle or toolbox so it doesn't drive you crazy rattling all the time.

There's a definite learning curve to them. They can and will hurt you if you are not absolutely familiar with them.
Buy quality and STAY AWAY FROM THAT HANDLE.

They can and will hurt you Hurt you? That is like when little Johnny said "a car ran over my dogs azz." Teacher said "you mean rectum" Johnny says "wrecked em hell, kill him." and a handyman jack can do just that, kill you, if your not careful
