I am going to replace the bolt shroud on my Remington 700.
I know how to pull the entire firing pin/shroud assembly from the bolt body, but I am not sure how to remove the shroud.

I figure someone should be able to fill me. Thanks in advance for any help you can give.

A tool is required to compress the spring, forcing the cocking piece body out beyond the shroud. The cross-pin holding the firing pin and cocking piece together will be revealed.

Drive the crosspin out with a small punch, then release the pressure slowly and carefully.

To reassemble, the firing pin needs to go into the new shroud and the whole thing needs to be compressed to allow the cocking piece and cross pin to be assembled.

A couple notes:
The cross pin should be reassembled exactly like it was previously as the hole may be crocked and it will save you a lot of grief to get it right.

There are tools available from several places with threads to screw onto the bolt shroud covering the pin and spring that allow the assembly to be compressed easily and safely. I did them for years with a shop built clamp and it was far easier with the proper tool.

A better shop-made set-up than my old one would be a pipe threaded internally to accept the shroud and internally threaded on the opposite end to allow a bolt to be driven in to compress the spring. It would be a fairly small assembly.

Thanks Art, I knew I had seen the bolt dis-assembly tools for sale in the past. I wasn't sure if could done by hand though like removing the Mauser assembly.

Now to shop for a dis-assembly tool...
