Emma got her first deer last year, so this year a buck was her priority. She has been scouting for several months, and also started looking at game cam shots from various locations around the farm. She spied an unusual palmated "spiky" buck and decided this was the one she wanted to go after.

I had to work opening day, so we didn't get out until Sunday morning. Forty-five minutes after climbing in the stand, she had her buck.

As you can see, her rifle is an 1894c, .357 Magnum. Bullet, 180 gr. Hornady xtp with Lil' Gun. Range, 53 yards. As last year, the deer dropped in it's tracks.

Nice deer Emma.

Thanks Dad, for letting your beautiful young daughter use a rifle more her size. I get so tired of watching "men" force rifles on their Ladies that is more rifle than they can shoot.

Thanks Derby Dude. When I was with KY. Fish and Wildlife I was able to convince our commission that accuracy was more important than bullet size, and that hunters had the good sense to use an adequate caliber. For deer you can use any centerfire cartridge in KY. After I left, the elk herd got big enough to hunt and the Commission said that the .270 was minimum in rifles, but handguns and arrows were fine! Stupid! My very petite wife is fine with a .243/.257 but can't handle anything larger. She let her drawn elk permit go because she did not want to hunt with a rifle she couldn't hit with.

We are fortunate here in Montana that even the lowly 22 center fire rifle can be used on elk. Many a dead bull elk has succumb to the 22-250 and the .220 Swift. I would imagine quite a few have been brought down with the .223. Elk are not armored plated.
