I have been looking for a NIB S&W 586 with a 4" barrel for some time but can't even find a well-used example. Did Smith sell that few of them? I know most police departments went with the 686 instead.
Assuming that I eventually find a NIB-98% 586, how much should I expect to pay for it? I paid around $275 for a well used but functionally perfect (and accurate) 686 about four years ago.
What do you think?
Thanks, RS

I just sold two 586s in the last couple weeks. There's gazillions of them out there to my reckoning (approximately).

I would put a 98% example at $450-$500 in my neck of the woods, but patience may net you one cheaper. Not sure I've seen even a heavily used one go in the $300s recently though.

Rip, there very popular. Here in Ohio in decent shape they can run 350 to 450,depending on condition. They are out there, just hold out untill you find a nice 1 at a reasonable price, then jump on it.

You mean like my pre-key 586-5 "CCW Special Edition?"

586's don't come up very often around here, but when they do, $500 seems to be the going rate. rarely ever see them for less, and sometimes for more.

i've been waiting on a good 6" specimen forever to get under that $500 mark locally, and am not having much luck...

I just noticed your screen name is Big Time. That's an amazing coincidence. I was just telling a story about a black guy I used to work with (like 25 years ago) who insisted everyone call him Big Time. His real name was Willie. I only know that because the black girls who worked there, and who refused to call him Big Time, told me.

I'm sure you could get one at the big Tulsa Gunshow this weekend. Don't know where you're from but if you're within 200 miles, it's worth checking out. Biggest in the world. Believe it.

I'd think you could get a well-worn example for less than $400. I don't know why you'd want one though. If I were buying a gun with a lot of holster-wear, I'd certainly want a 686. The blued guns look a lot rattier 'cause they show their wear so much worse. If I was getting a 586, I'd want one with little wear. As to the internals, I ALWAYS want one with little wear...or none.

Prices on S&Ws have gone WAY UP in the last year or so , at least around here. You won't get anything around here for $275 anymore Rip.
