Are the same sans finish? It appears that the 586 is the blued version, whilst the 686 is stainless. Is that correct?

586=Blue

686=Stainless

A S&W model number beginning with "6" generally denotes stainless construction.

I've owned one or two blued and three or four stainless versions as well as at least one fixed sight version of the L frame. IMO they are the best .357 made with the stainless adjustable sighted 686 the absolute top.

They are. I had one in college, the 7 shoot, 6". I loved that pistol, ebbed up trading it off for a Wetherby shotgun i couldn't live with out. I think i will own a 586 4" in the future. I've got a few pistols, just not a revolver.

I love the new 596 Classic S&W just re-introduced. from what I've read, it is rifle accurate.

There are a few on Gunbroker $700.00 range and worth it!

I predict future happiness for Americans if they can prevent the government from wasting the labors of the people under the pretense of taking care of them.

Yes, have owned several, and while they are beautifully made and usually very accurate, I much prefer the feel of the S&W. I also like the fact that the ejector rod acts as a forward lock on the S&W design, but that's admittedly getting a bit academic. My 686 is as accurate as the Pythons I've had, FWIW.
