Do you think it's worth reloading for? Walmart sells a 100 round box of Federal 230 grain FMJs for $29.95.

Based on your Walmart price I can reload 100 rounds (cast) in 15-minutes for $8 in and save $22, or $88 per hour.

Primers are $4.00 a hundred. Cast bullets can be had for $35.00 for 500. It would take me 2 weeks of afternoons to cast 500 useable bullets and I cast pretty often.

It all depends on how much you shoot and the value of your time. If, like me, you no longer shoot that much then reloading really doesn't make munch sense unless you just like doing it. To save any real money, you have to buy components in quantity. If you're willing to buy in quantity, you can get pretty good deals on ammo and it's always ready to go. Also, if you save the brass there is a ready market for it, helping to defer the cost.

I've never cast a bullet in my life and don't plan to. Me either. I'm learning to reload to tailor my loads to my custom 1911 when I get it back.

I used to regularly buy the cheap factory stuff or locally produced reloads sold in bulk at the gunshowss due to limited time. Since buying my Hornady LnL I roll my own.

Lead is mostly scavanged, and thus free. And it sure don't take two weeks of afternoons to cast 500 bullets. I have a four gang mould. Even at two minutes per cast, thats 120 per hour. And it doesn't take two minutes per cast. Most of my brass has been scavanged. Thus my only cost is the primer and powder, they are pretty inexpensive. I don't buy that store stuff.

My brass is scavenged from firing ranges as well but usually try to get once fired only. I'll stand behind and to the right of anyone I see shooting a .45 with a box of factory ammo and catch their brass in mid-air. The trick is to keep out of their peripheral vision so they don't see you. When they go to look for their brass and it's missing they just attribute it to the normal inter-dimensional portal that swallows most semi-auto brass. Sometimes one will spot me and object to what I'm doing but I just tell'em, "Hey! If you really wanted to keep your brass you'd have gotten a revolver..."

Just bought a new STI (PICS up later). I will carry factory of course but I went ahead and bought everything to reload looking for max accuracy, that's just me though.. Four years ago when Yobama got elected, I hoarded a bunch of .45 and 9mm ammo, still have most of it.
I like to load for my stuff.

In a pistol I can't shoot better than 1" at 15 yards (with cheap commerical ammo) so precise ammo probably wouldn't help me much.

I've never cast a bullet in my life and don't plan to. Too bad. Casting boolits is an enjoyable and relaxing pasttime. It's not for everybody, but I get a lot of satisfaction from casting. I can save a bunch of money on bullets, or I can cast precision hunting bullets, and so forth. It just enhances the whole reloading experience.

It's worth reloading to me. I've gotten all of my brass for free, primers are $28/1000, A pound of powder will load 1400 rounds (5gr. load), and I cast my own 200gr bullets. I only pay for powder and primer. I can cast 350-400 bullets/hour. I'm loading for a little more than $4/100. That's only a penny more than 22 rimfire.
If I didn't cast and reload, I couldn't afford to shoot handgun or shotgun...I make my own shot too! I can load a box of skeet shells for les than $2.

I tend to shoot frequently so reloading saves me a bundle. Another way you can look at it is you can buy premium gold dots, reload them, and still be at or under the cost of the cheapest factory rounds you can find. So basically you can pay the same price to practice with the defensive loads you might carry as with FMJ factory loads.
