A fella I know through work has a friend that's selling a bunch of guns. One of which is a Remington 581-S listed in 95% condition for $240. I understand that they were great rifles but I don't believe I've ever known anyone personally that has one. So what says y'all? I've priced them on gunbroker and the asking price seems good. Thanks

Fabulous rifle. If there's more than one hole on a target - the fault was mine. The main difference between the 580 and the premium 540 lines was the wood. The actions and such were identical or nearly so. The 540 is renowned for accuracy - and the budget 580 shoots just as well.

Thanks Rocky, that's what I've heard/read too. It's like the 788 version of a rifire.

More than you think; it's got the same rear lug 60� lift setup, except with only two rings of three lugs each instead of three rings.

I hate you! Traded mine 2 yrs ago at a shop for $125 and kicking myself ever since (it was 95% or better). Mine was a glossy walnut style wood I bought about 1974 Now, they've taken off in price. Saw one at a shop last month, wood was beech, well worn but not gouged, asking $125 so it probably sold for $100. Was gonna buy it and refinish or restock it, but it was gone the next wk.
Depending on the wood condition go for it or negotiate. PS, the triggers are a little stiff and hard to work on, but guys on www.rimfirecentral.com Remington subforum can help you out on that end.

Thanks for the replies fellas. I haven't seen the gun but it's listed as 98% (I think I said 95% in the first post). It's listed as having a scope but unknown manufacture, magnification, etc.

Bought my son a new 581 youth model when he was 9 or 10, still shoots great and the Kid is now 36. Not much of a problem with the shorter length of pull, either.

Plus it blends in well with the M788 collection. ;O)

I had a 581-S and a standard 581. Sold the -S and kept the other one. Accuracy is there, but triggers suck. I did a trigger job one one, and sent the other trigger to Brian Voelker to do. He's done LOTS of Rem 580 and 788 triggers, both the same design. His was far better than mine, which was my first go at it.
I have mine set up with a rear peep and a globe front for sights, and will keep it that way.
Shot one five shot, 25 yard group with the irons that measured 1/4", off the bench.
The 580's are a best kept secret for rimfire rifle accuracy. The 541's that followed use the same receiver.

i hunt squirrels with a 580. the rifle is every bit as accurate as a kimber i used to own.

I've got one that I picked up years ago for $30 NIB. Grants department stores were going belly up and they cleared all of their firearms for penies on the dollar. Mine has the beech stock with a reworked trigger. shoots bugholes, but the beech is really ugly. Anybody know where I can get a decent walnut stock?

Iv got a like new 581 with a 3/9 nikon pro staff.Its my fav off hand 22.Super light walnut stock.

Buy it! Its one of the most accurate 22s ever made. I have the 582 tube fed model, shoots bugholes.

bought a 582 off this site yesterday! Made up for losing one many years ago!

Nice to see a mention of a good old store, we're probable a couple of the few that even remembers, Grants, Barker's, Woolco, Woolworth and Caldor's to name a few...
BTW I think Numrich may have some decent looking walnut stocks actually for 541s but they are the same rifle...

Or you could always strip yours to bare wood and stain it walnut or mahogny...

Thanks for the link. I think the pictured 541 stock is inletted for a heavy barrel. They do list a 581 stock, but currently sold out. You have a point about a stain and refinish. Why screw up a good thing? That Grant's closeing sale was something. I also got a Winchester 30-06 for $90. At that point, I was out of $$, and didn't own a credit card!

I have a 581S that shoots extremely well. It is my favorite squirrel rifle, light and very accurate. I bought it in the years ago and it wears an old Leupold M8 6X scope. Grab it you won't be dissapointed.

I have a 581L that I bought as soon as I heard they were discontinued. Local smith did the trigger. It is about 2.5# and crisp as can be. The rifle shoots bughole groups. No way would I ever part with it, even if the beech stock is ugly.

BTW, the 581S was a reintroduction for the 581 after it was gone for a few years. Good thing I bought my lefty as there were no left hand guns in teh S series.

I put an .065 ink pen spring, cut to size in mine and had a great trigger.

We shot ground squirrels at 100-125 with mine...one shot....one kill....

I hope you enjoy that 582 Keith, I just bought a 581 from ElkIvory and it showed up yesterday! I was looking at the CZ scout for my son/daughter to use, but decided I wanted to go Big Green. Now I'm on the hunt for a shortened stock as I can't bring myself to cut this one, Birch and all. (I have an as new 582 as well.) I think a 541-S and or T may be in my future as well. Heck, there's one in the local paper.
