I am thinking about a new left-handed 22lr bolt action. I was thinking about the CZ 452 American or LUX. Anyone have any experience with either? Will be used as a paper puncher / plinker and hunter. Also was considering the Savage MKII.

Thanks,

Josh

Dude:

I've got a LUX and love it. The iron sights are superb.

It's not stocked for bench-rest paper punching, but as a woods-walking plinker, it's in the same category as a Marlin 39A. Stocked for irons, and steady in the hands while standing on your own two feet like a man.

But if you simply must put a scope on it, it'll work fine that way, too.

Well....not %100 on the scope now that you mention it. Like I said, I have a Marlin M60 that is scoped. The only issue I used to have with my first 22 (break open single shot with irons) was that out past 40 or 50 yards, the sights become quite large when pointed at such small critters. I would be willing to try and reassess that belief however since it has been a great many number of years since I've hunted anything with a non-scoped 22. I will say that after handling the LUX today, I am definately trying to come up with a reason to get one. Wish I could handle an American first though.

There are always a lot of both stock types (the Specials, Trainers, and UltraLuxes are stocked like a Lux) at our local matches but if you want to shoot a scoped rifle, you should opt for the American.

Range report from this morning's 50 yard silhouette match:

Here are the brand new silhouettes riding on the brand new rimfire racks. We want to say a special thanks to Randy and Ricky King for making the new racks. They are an excellent design and very well made.

[Linked Image]

The new set up substitutes six little chickens for the original version's six big chickens. To compensate for the higher degree of difficulty and to give folks a little more shooting, we increased the round count from 25 to 30.

We opened the boxes of silhouettes and discovered that Metal Spinning Target Company had included five standing prairie dog silos for free. Perry Willard suggested we put one in each top row and keep the tiebreaker target available (knocking it down is represented by a /1 in the scores below). Great idea Perry and that lets us keep the 50/25 name as well - still 25 targets at 50 yards. Ones score is the number of silhouettes left standing and the low score wins.

Has anyone else noticed what a great optically sighted offhand shot Dave Hollimon has become? I have - Way to go Dave! The perennial iron sight master, Wille Rhodes, shot his way into first place this morning in both open and peep sight classes. Here are the scores:

A CZ Ultralux is next on my list of rifles to acquire; gotta get set for CMP Sporter at Perry this summer grin Gonna pair it with a 425 American with a Leupold 6x for the scoped rifle class.

If you're going to go with a new, left handed 452 then jump on it as they have been discontinued and replaced by the 455. I'm sure some dealers still have them hanging around.

I just picked up a 455 as a back-up/guest rifle for silhouette shooting. I haven't had a chance to get it the range to see what it likes yet (hoping cheap!). The trigger was 5.5 lbs out of the box and my smith reduced to about three.

Dude,

I'd opt for the Lux, got a couple of trainers (same as the Lux except doesn't have the walnut stock), easy to scope with a more compact scope such as the Nikon 4X rimfire, weaver either 4X or 2-7X rimfire scopes, etc. If you have to have a larger scope on it the tangent sights come off really easy (if there is interference). The Tangent sights are really fun, wasn't that much into irons until I got one of these. I think it's J&P Products (check over at rimfirecentral...CZ forum) makes a so called ghost ring replacement for the rear sight blade...a marked improvement for my older eyes...easy to install.

The American is a classic and nice rifle too, but scope only. If you can afford it get both, the 452 is being discontinued, if kept in good shape the value should rise.

These are the rings if you scope a Lux. They're lower, cost less, and are sturdier than the CZ rings,...and have the proper size dovetail.

I mounted a scope with a 32mm objective lense on mine with these rings, and with the rear sight all the way down, there's about 1/16th inch clearance between the scope and the rear sight,...about as perfect as it gets.

Just used a set of BKL rings for my CZ-455 American with a 42 mm scope in it. They worked well and at $21 a set cheaper yet (and made in America)

Pugs, I just picked up a 455 American yesterday, how's yours shooting? Did you get the combo, or the single? I picked up the combo at Whittaker's, they are on sale for a pretty fair $500.99, and I couldn't pass it up.

All I've done so far is plink with it after my deer was hanging and it worked fine at that. grin I need to have a calm day at the range to fool with a few different types of ammo yet.

I'm not sure what you mean by the combo. I got the rifle alone for $455 and a Vortex 3-10x43 from Doug to put on top. It's my backup/guest rifle for silhouette so I wanted a scope with turrets.

The combos sell with 2 barrels, usually the .22LR and .17HMR, which is what mine came with. Paid $501 for the whole ball of wax. I don't know if I'll chase down a .22 Magnum barrel for it or not, I guess I've got to see how it shoots with the other two barrels before tying up any additional money.
Whittaker's is selling the single chambering .22LR for $366 on sale right now, but then, he's always got pretty good prices on CZs. He sure moves a LOT of them.

www.whittakerguns.com I think the sale items are on the first page, new barrels are $119.99. Seems like a great price for having extra chamberings.

That's a screaming good deal if you're looking for more barrels for sure. I have no real need for the .17 HMR I have.

"Need" is a four letter word around here! laugh Heck, I have several .22s and had a couple of HMRs till I gave one to a buddy of mine, now I'm back to 1.5?, I guess. This rifle is completely superflous to "needs", but "wants" trump "need" these days.

I really like the HMRs when I go PDoggin'. When things slow down midday, it's fun to take one for a walk and pop a few dogs in a more leisurely fashion than hammering away at them with a .223 or .204.
The .22LR barrel will be used for plinking and maybe a few tree rats from time to time.

I picked up a 453 American used off CGN in Canada, and scoped it with a 4-12X40AO, and it is a laser guided missile launcher. The 453 has the set trigger, which I have yet to use because the normal trigger is so sweet - likely around 2 pounds with only a hint of creep and no overtravel. Lights out with bulk ammo, and I paid less than the cost of a new 452 for the 453 which typically runs 150 more.

I have a 452 and have only good to say about it. It's been an excellent rifle over the 14 or 15 years I've had it. Very accurate, fine trigger, handles well. No issues at all.
