I'd buy it for that based on what you described.

Yup

Democracy is not freedom. Democracy is two wolves and a lamb voting on what to eat for lunch. Freedom comes from the recognition of certain rights which may not be taken, not even by a 99% vote.

Very reasonable price, based on your updated description..

Most of those are going for $700++

I would say generally that most Pre-64 Model 70's bottom out in value at $600. Most shooters in the condition you describe sell in the $700 range. What you have described would clearly be worth $500 in my opinion. I would buy it, You could throw the barrel and stock away and still have a $500 action.

serial number?

not that it really matters.....unless somebody butchered the D&T, the action is worth that. And you could always go to bigger scope mount holes if that's a problem.
