Contemplating a M700 w/ irons for the gf, in place of the custom was planning. Are the factory iron sights on a M700 of around 2003 pretty respectable, just ok, or of token quality? Plastic, metal? Cuz if they're not actually Swampy-grade, best "in the world", maybe will pass on the rifle and stick w/ original custom plan and commit to starting it (wallet quivering). Any opinion?

They are the only factory sights I can see well enough to use.

Fair enough. Are they an in-house design, a Williams sight, or a what?

edit: ok, called around to find a store w/ one in stock, will have a looksee tomorrow. None in LGS, but called good 'ol walmart on a lark.

As far as I know they are an in house design.

They are actually fairly decent if you file out the rear sight factory notch to a wide V.

OEM Remington sights are awful and getting worse. Williams makes OK ones that will screw right on.

Remington sights, unlike some which are referred to as pot metal, are actually inferior to the cast steel sights, being constructed of sintered metal. But they work.

I kill with 'em. Focus on the front sight tip and squeeze. How well you can see is one thing. The remmy sights seem to have good contrast and the front sight is easy to see. For that reason I sonsider them good.

I see Jim Brockman's replacement ghost ring sights as the best in the world, but the Rem sights do work. Most manufacturers expect us to mount a scope anyway when we buy their rifles, so they spend as little on them as they can.

I've found them very servicable to my eyes. How that will work for you I don't know. Haven't really tested the durability of them, but for plain usefullness I can see well enough with them to hit out to 150-200 on a deer sized target. FWIW I have young eyes (29) and wear contacts to correct to 20/20 or a little better, so older not as sharp eyes may see them differently.

They are one of the few irons I can actually use with my poor eyes.

I would spend the money to have a peep sight mounted. I am at least twice as accurate with a peep as I am with open sights.

They are slightly less dangerous than a Remington trigger. Never use them without eye protection, or you'll shoot yer eye out when it goes off by surprise. cool

Seriously though, they seem kinda high, but aren't too bad to put on target. I really think a ghost ring and blade front like XS Sight Systems are superior, but that's surely just personal preference.

Williams aperture rear sight is not very expensive, and a huge upgrade over the factory open sight.

I put a Williams aperture on a sporter M700 30-06 years ago, and filed the front bead into a square post and reblued it. Made for very accurate and useable sights.

Oh yea, the Peep sight with a good front blade would be my ultimate choice as well. But its pretty darn hard to find a factory gun that comes with those, or a setup that allows you to use a scope in QR rings and then without adding anything use the iron sights.

This. I prefer a V in the rear.
